Travel to Pleiku City, Gia Lai on Your Own with mr.hotsia
This time, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my experience traveling to Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province, Vietnam. Many may not be familiar with this place yet, but I can say that this is a peaceful corner of the Central Highlands of Vietnam, full of charm and a chill atmosphere that impressed me greatly.
Getting to Know Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province
Pleiku is the capital city of Gia Lai Province, located on the northern highlands of Vietnam. It is 700-800 meters above sea level, making the weather cooler than the lowlands. The city is culturally diverse, with 28 ethnic groups living here. Walking through the city streets, I felt the calmness, few people, light traffic, and most importantly, the weather was truly pleasant.
Gia Lai Province borders Cambodia. To the east, it borders Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, and Phu Yen provinces. To the south, it borders Dak Lak, and to the north, Kon Tum. This makes it an interesting connection point for adventurous travelers who want to experience the local lifestyles in diverse areas.
Getting to Pleiku City
For me, the journey started from Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province. Don't confuse it with Da Lat, which many often do. Buon Ma Thuot is the main city of Dak Lak and has convenient bus connections to Pleiku. I took a morning bus from Pakse, Laos, passing through Kon Tum before arriving in Pleiku in the afternoon. This is the easiest and most convenient route for independent travelers.
Additionally, Pleiku has a small airport served by Air Mekong and Vietnam Airlines, connecting flights between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Vinh. Those who want to save travel time can fly directly here.
Where to Stay in Pleiku?
I chose to stay atHoang Gia Hotelwhich is located near the market and the central city lake. The location is very convenient for walking anywhere. The hotel is affordable, about 600 baht per night. This spot is a strategic base for exploring Pleiku city. There are also other hotels like Green Bamboo, Tre Xanh Plaza Hotel, and Duc Long Apartment that are affordable and convenient.
Lifestyle and Atmosphere in Pleiku
I really enjoyed walking around the Pleiku morning market, which is full of fresh produce, food, and authentic local life. This market gave me a genuine local experience, from the lively chatter to the aroma of freshly cooked local dishes.
During my visit, I chose to stroll by the city lake, sipping strong Vietnamese coffee while watching people exercising and doing morning activities. This feeling was warm and very relaxing for those who enjoy peaceful moments like this.
Local Foods You Must Try in Pleiku
Speaking of food, I, mr.hotsia, must say this place is one of the most impressive destinations for me, especially the ethnic minority dish called Lễu ộ. Here, I tried highland-style grilled chicken, fragrant and flavorful, served with hot Vietnamese bamboo sticky rice at Ko Nia restaurant. This delicious spot is located on SU VAN HANH street in Pleiku city. It is well-known among locals and rarely visited by foreign tourists.
The grilled chicken here is cooked until the skin is crispy and fragrant with local spices. You eat it with your hands. The aroma of grilled chicken and hot bamboo sticky rice was irresistible, so I ordered another set. Also, don't miss the fried chicken with fish sauce, another must-try dish that I highly recommend.Read more about local food Lễu ộ in Pleiku, Gia LaiMore details available.
Besides local dishes, I also found Vietnamese pizza that was unique and interesting, along with warm local liquor that suits Pleiku's cool weather perfectly.
What Impressed Me in Pleiku
Besides the food and atmosphere, I liked that this city is not crowded, allowing for relaxed walks in every corner. There is also the football stadium of the Hoàng Anh Gia Lai team, which once had famous players like Kiatisuk Senamuang and Tawan Sripan. The city's vibe made me want to live here for a while.
Recommended Routes and Travel Tips
If you plan to visit Pleiku like me, I recommend traveling from Thailand to Ubon Ratchathani, then by bus to Pakse, Laos, followed by a bus to Kon Tum, and finally a local bus to Pleiku. This route is easy and straightforward, with beautiful natural scenery along the way.
For those who prefer flying, Air Mekong and Vietnam Airlines offer convenient flights connecting Pleiku with major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang.
