Bus from Điện Biên Phủ to Sơn La: A scenic route and the Black Thai way of life I will never forget
Hello, I ammr.hotsiaI had the chance to spend two nights in Điện Biên Phủ city (Điện Biên), a province well known among many Thai people for its significant historical battlefields. But for me, this time I didn’t come just to see history. I came to relax at the end of 2012, which is winter in Thailand, but in Điện Biên Phủ it was rainy and moist, so I stayed here for two full days before deciding to continue my journey to Sơn La province by local bus.
The route from Điện Biên Phủ to Sơn La is a mountainous road winding through high peaks and deep valleys, similar to the route to Pai in Thailand that many are familiar with. But the views here have a unique charm that impressed me greatly, especially the atmosphere of the Black Thai villages seen along both sides of the road. The locals wear full traditional Black Thai costumes, walking or working naturally by the roadside, reminding me of a rural lifestyle that still preserves traditional customs well.
Along the way, passing green rice fields alternating with small plains used by locals for rice farming, I saw buffaloes grazing and heard children shouting as they played in the villages. It felt like being in a real-life movie about the Black Thai people here. The route is about 150 kilometers and takes about half a day by bus. The bus left Điện Biên Phủ at noon, and I arrived in Sơn La in the late afternoon.
Upon arriving in Sơn La city, the capital of Sơn La province, I noticed it is still not well known among foreign tourists. The bus station is about 7 kilometers from the accommodation area. I recommend not walking because the road is quite far and there are no clear sidewalks. Taking a taxi from the station to the city is a better option and the price is very reasonable. The taxi drivers here seem friendly and honest, unlikely to overcharge like in major tourist spots.
For accommodation in Sơn La, I chose to stay atNha Gghi alibarawhich is near the Sơn La market (Chợ Sơn La), an area suitable for strolling and experiencing local life. The market is lively, with many fresh vegetables, fruits, and local foods for sale. If you have read myĐiện Biên Phủ travel articleyou will know that I really enjoy this kind of lifestyle because it allows a genuine connection with the community, not just tourist spots.
The route from Điện Biên Phủ to Sơn La is very worthwhile for those who love mountain views and learning about local culture. The Black Thai people here have distinctive characteristics, from their unique traditional costumes to their rice farming methods and simple daily lives full of warmth. I had the chance to chat with some locals and met several who spoke some Thai, as the Black Thai in Điện Biên Phủ and nearby areas share deep blood and cultural ties with Thai people. The Black Thai Capital, Điện Biên Phủwhich I have written about before will help you understand this context better.
If anyone wants to experience this atmosphere, I recommend allowing two days to stay in Điện Biên Phủ to truly experience the local market and the Black Thai way of life before traveling by local bus to Sơn La like I did. This route is still not crowded with tourists and retains the raw nature and culture very well.
Additionally, for traveling from Thailand to Điện Biên Phủ, I have recommended the route through Chiang Khong checkpoint in Chiang Rai province, crossing to the Huay Sai side in Bokeo province, then continuing by bus to Oudomxay and Khoua before reaching Điện Biên Phủ. This is a popular route for adventurous travelers who want to explore northern Vietnam seriously.Traveling from Điện Biên Phủ to Sapais another interesting route if you have more time and want to visit several cities.
Food and Market Atmosphere in Sơn La
During my stay in Sơn La, I walked around the local market which is the community center. The food here is fresh and unique, such as local sticky rice called Xôi or Xoi topped with shredded pork or colorful local vegetables. There is also Bánh cuốn chả nóng, grilled pork served with Vietnamese steamed rice rolls, which is very delicious. I tried hot local street food freshly made with a rich and unique flavor. If anyone is interested in northern Vietnamese cuisine, I have video clips introducing delicious dishes like Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidWatch Grilled Button Squid Videoand Vietnamese Chicken BiryaniWatch Chicken Biryani Videothat I have recorded for you to enjoy.
