Travel Dien Bien Phu: A City at the Crossroads of History and the Thai Black People's Way of Life

When mentioning Dien Bien Phu, this city name often evokes images of historic battlefields familiar to Thai people through the famous Thai movie"Escape from the Hell Camp of Dien Bien Phu"which was once very popular. But for me, mr.hotsia, visiting Dien Bien Phu today is like opening a door to a travel route that takes you to Northern Vietnam and Sapa, through a city still full of the Thai Black people's way of life, densely populated as if our home is just nearby.

The recommended route from Thailand to Dien Bien Phu starts from the border checkpoint at Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, crossing to the Huay Sai side, Bokeo Province. This is an important starting point for adventures in Northern Vietnam. Then take a car to Udomxai city for about 4 hours. I stayed here for one night; accommodation is very cheap, about 200 baht, located next to the bus station and very convenient. The next morning, continue to Khoa city, about 4 hours, and stay another night before taking an early morning bus to Dien Bien Phu for a full 7 hours. This route takes time but is worth it for the complex mountain views and the slowly changing rural lifestyle.Read more about traveling from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa

Relax with affordable accommodation in Dien Bien Phu

Upon arriving in Dien Bien Phu, what impressed me was the variety of accommodations at affordable prices. Hotels and guesthouses in this city are plentiful, ranging from 300-500 baht per night, with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and mosquito nets provided. Even after several nights, I did not encounter any annoying insects. This comfort at this price is very good compared to other tourist cities in Northern Vietnam. You don't have to book in advance because there is plenty of accommodation, but if you want peace of mind, booking ahead is certainly acceptable.

Homestyle Vietnamese Food in Dien Bien Phu

Regarding food, Dien Bien Phu did not disappoint me. The Thai Black people here speak Thai well, making me feel like eating at home. There are many pho restaurants in the city, with bowls priced around 40 baht. Rice dishes with various toppings are also available at typical local eateries. Made-to-order meals cost about 80 baht per person. Compared to Thailand, food in Dien Bien Phu may be slightly more expensive, but I must say it is delicious and flavorful. For those who like beer, "Hanoi Beer" is easy to find here, with small bottles priced around 30 baht or 15,000 dong, which helps cool down in the heat.

The Thai Black People's Way of Life and Local Markets: The Heart of Dien Bien Phu

Dien Bien Phu is a city with a large population of Thai Black people. The houses you pass by are all inhabited by Thai Black people who speak Thai fluently. The Tai Lam or Thai Black people here have distinct characteristics, especially their beautifully high coiffed hairstyles often seen in local markets. I once strolled through the two Thai Black markets. The riverside market has more Thai Black people and is a place where you can enjoy conversations and cultural exchanges with the Thai Black people here in a very fun and friendly way.

I personally had the chance to talk with Thai Black vendors and got a haircut at a Thai Black shop in this city. I got to know a friendly group of people who invited me to eat at their home, an experience not easily found in other cities.Read more about the Thai Black people in Dien Bien PhuTalking with people who speak Thai like me abroad gives a warm and unique sense of connection that I want you to experience yourself.

Historic Battlefield and City View from the Hilltop

Another interesting place I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend is the high hill that was once a battlefield between North Vietnam and France in the past. We can see traces of tanks sunk in trenches, secret tunnels used to transport artillery, which were disassembled and carried up to the hilltop. This place not only offers a deep historical learning opportunity but also breathtaking panoramic views of Dien Bien Phu city. It takes only a few steps to reach the summit, suitable for those who enjoy visiting historical sites and nature at the same time.Read the full Dien Bien Phu travel story

Connecting Travel to Nearby Cities and Sapa

Dien Bien Phu is also an important connection point for traveling to other cities in Northern Vietnam, such as Sapa, a route I have used and documented inthe travel article from Dien Bien Phu to SapaThis route passes through many interesting towns and rural areas along the way, making the journey not just transportation but also a travel experience itself. There are also routes to Xela and Lai Châu cities, full of local lifestyles and cultures to explore.Read about buses from Dien Bien Phu to Xelaandbuses from Dien Bien Phu to Lai Châu

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, Dien Bien Phu is a city full of interesting stories and life, from the historic battlefield ruins to the warm and friendly Thai Black people's way of life, and delicious local food that connects Thai and Vietnamese people together. Visiting Dien Bien Phu feels like traveling back in time and experiencing a new world simultaneously. I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if anyone wants to escape the hustle and bustle and experience Thai culture abroad, this place is a very good answer.
