Travel to Dien Bien Phu: From a War City to a Town of Lifestyle and Tai Dam People
When talking about Dien Bien Phu, many think of the important historical battlefield in northern Vietnam. But for me, mr.hotsia, Dien Bien Phu is not just about war stories. It is a city full of life, community ways, and the Tai Dam culture that remains vibrant and warmly impressive.
Travel Route from Thailand to Dien Bien Phu
The route I took to Dien Bien Phu was very convenient and interesting. Starting from Chiang Khong checkpoint, Chiang Rai province, crossing the border to Huay Sai, Bokeo province, Laos. Then taking a car to Oudomxay city, which takes about 4 hours. I stayed overnight here; accommodation is affordable, about 200 baht per night, close to the bus station and very convenient. Then from Oudomxay, I took a car to Muang Khua for another 4 hours, stayed one night in Muang Khua before setting off early morning to Dien Bien Phu, which takes about 7 hours to reach the city center.
Although this route is long, it is filled with mountain scenery and Tai Dam villages along the way. While riding the car, I saw Tai Dam people wearing traditional tribal clothes walking along the road, green rice fields, and complex mountains similar to the route to Pai in Thailand.
Dien Bien Phu City: Tai Dam Community and Warm Life
Today, Dien Bien Phu is not just an old war city but a place densely inhabited by the Tai Dam people, also called “Tai Lam.” Most houses I passed had Tai Dam people who spoke Thai fluently and were very kind. If you stand confused, you can easily ask for food or water. I was once invited to eat at a house without realizing it. It felt like coming back to my hometown.
One of my favorite spots is the “Tai Dam Market.” There are two markets here; the riverside market has especially many Tai Dam people. Talking with locals here feels like meeting relatives living far away. You also get to learn about the charming and unique Tai Dam culture and language, such as the high bun hairstyle that, when you see someone wearing it, you know you can greet them.
Accommodation and Food in Dien Bien Phu
No need to worry about accommodation in Dien Bien Phu. There are many hotels and guesthouses ranging from cheap prices around 300-500 baht per night. Most accommodations have air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and mosquito nets. Even though I stayed several times, I hardly encountered mosquitoes. You can book in advance or walk in comfortably; no problem with full occupancy.
As for food, it’s quite good here. Pho bowls cost about 40 baht each. There are many dishes with rice and made-to-order meals to choose from. The average price is around 80 baht per meal, which is slightly higher than in Thailand but still worth it for the taste and unique atmosphere. Especially if you like beer, I saw small bottles of “Hanoi Beer” sold for 30 baht each, perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
Key Attractions: Battlefields and City Views from the Hilltop
Besides the Tai Dam Market, another place mr.hotsia recommends visiting is the high hill that was an important battlefield during the war between North Vietnam and France.
Here you will see tank wrecks with still visible shell holes, tunnels used to transport artillery, and historical relics that tell the story of the people's resilience in the past. Moreover, when you reach the hilltop, the view of Dien Bien Phu city is stunning, with mountain ranges and the city spreading clearly below. The hill is not very high; just a few steps to the top, suitable for all ages who want to experience history alongside nature.
