Cat Cat Village in Sapa, Vietnam
If you arrive in Sapa, Lào Cai Province, one thing I, mr.hotsia, recommend you to experience yourself is Cat Cat Village, locally pronounced as "Cat Cat." This Hmong ethnic village is located just 3 kilometers from Sapa town. You can either walk or rent a motorbike to get there comfortably.
Cat Cat Village is one of the most well-known and popular villages among tourists in Sapa. To be honest, it is not very different from Hmong villages in our country, as the lifestyle and culture are quite similar. However, what makes this village interesting is its closeness to nature and the preservation of traditional ways of life. If you have time and want to capture the atmosphere of the hill tribe people and the old wooden houses lined up on the mountain, Cat Cat Village is a good choice.
Getting to Cat Cat Village
From Sapa town, you can walk downhill to the village via two starting points on the walking trail. I, mr.hotsia, recommend starting from point one to walk downhill continuously, passing viewpoints and houses until you reach point 14, the village exit. This route offers a great atmosphere and a genuine glimpse into the Hmong way of life.
For those who want to save time or prefer to explore by motorbike like me, you can rent a motorbike in Sapa town and ride along small roads connecting to the village and nearby attractions such as Silver Waterfall, which is not far from the village. This waterfall is beautiful and also features Hmong cultural performances at the viewpoint, though a small entrance fee applies.
Village Atmosphere and Lifestyle
Upon entering Cat Cat Village, you will see traditional wooden houses of the Hmong people that are well preserved. The terraced rice fields surrounding the village are a rare sight nowadays. Children in the village wear colorful traditional costumes as they play or help their families work in the fields. Adults engage in handicrafts such as weaving and silverwork, which are popular souvenirs among tourists.
However, I, mr.hotsia, must honestly say that Cat Cat Village has been developed to suit tourists more, with many shops and souvenir stalls, sometimes making the atmosphere feel more like a tourist market than a real village.
Recommended Routes and Nearby Attractions
After visiting Cat Cat Village, I, mr.hotsia, suggest continuing to Silver Waterfall, which is nearby. Besides the beautiful waterfall, there are Hmong cultural performances at a reasonable price. This waterfall is a popular viewpoint that tourists should not miss.
For those interested in the lifestyle and culture of the hill tribes in this area, I recommend visiting Bac Ha Market, about 36 kilometers from Lào Cai city, where I have shared my experience in an article.Bac Ha MarketThere you will see hill tribe people wearing traditional costumes selling and buying goods. It is a market that still retains the charm and authenticity of the hill tribe culture.
Traveling to Sapa and Cat Cat Village
I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Sapa by various means. Once, I took a train from Yen Bai to Lào Cai train station, then transferred to a van to Sapa town. Van fares can be negotiated based on your bargaining skills (read more details atTrain from Yen Bai to SAPA). Traveling to Sapa might seem difficult for Thai travelers who have never been, but once you try, you will find it worth the atmosphere and experience.
Food and Atmosphere in Sapa Town
Before or after visiting Cat Cat Village, I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying local food in Sapa’s budget food zone located under the morning market. This area has various affordable restaurants suitable for backpackers, including local dishes favored by hill tribes such as stir-fried tofu or Vietnamese chicken biryani, which looks similar to our own chicken biryani (watch the chicken biryani clip atVietnamese Chicken Biryani)
). Also, if you want to experience the authentic hill tribe atmosphere, visit Sapa morning market. In the morning, many hill tribe people come to sell and buy daily necessities. It is a lively time full of cultural colors.
Summary of Experience and Recommendations from mr.hotsia
Cat Cat Village is a favorite destination for tourists visiting Sapa. If you enjoy nature walks, studying hill tribe lifestyles, and want to photograph a traditional village that is still alive, this village will not disappoint.
However, if you seek excitement or something different, I recommend riding a motorbike to Silver Waterfall or visiting Bac Ha Market, which has a more traditional atmosphere. Don’t forget to try authentic Vietnamese food in Sapa’s budget food zone to complete your travel experience in this land.
