Lao Cai, a Vietnamese border town that is more than just a stopover before Sapa

When talking about Lao Cai Province in northern Vietnam, many people probably think of Sapa first because Sapa is a popular tourist town located in this province. But for me, mr.hotsia, Lao Cai is not just a transit or stopover before going to Sapa. It is a city with its own charm and interesting way of life.

Lao Cai is located next to the Chinese border. It is the main gateway for travel between Hanoi and Sapa, with Lao Cai train station as a key hub for railway travel. I have used this route many times, such as on trips where I tookthe train from Yen Bai to Sapaand had to pass through Lao Cai before continuing another 36 kilometers by car to Sapa.

My memories of Lao Cai are very clear because the first time I arrived, I mistakenly saw tall buildings across the border and thought the city must be very modern. But upon closer look, I realized those buildings were on the Chinese side adjacent to Lao Cai. This image made me feel that the city is truly next to China, and this border feeling gives Lao Cai a special charm.

Lao Cai Train Station, a meeting point for travelers

I want to share the atmosphere at Lao Cai train station because it is a place where tourists often stop or change trains, especially those coming from Hanoi or heading to Sapa. In the evening, if you walk around the train station area, you will see many restaurants and beer shops lined up. The chill atmosphere is perfect for relaxing while waiting for each train departure.

One thing I really like is the large luggage storage shop not far from the train station. Tourists visiting Sapa or Bac Ha often leave their belongings here because it is convenient and safe. There is also high-speed Wi-Fi available, which is very handy for those who want to check information or plan their next trip.

However, one limitation I encountered is internet usage in Vietnam, where websites like Facebook are blocked. To access them, you need to subscribe to a VPN service costing about 300 baht (10 USD) per month. If you plan to travel here, it’s best to prepare in advance.

Local lifestyle and markets that still hold local charm

Although Lao Cai is a transit city, I found that it has an interesting local hill tribe lifestyle and culture. The local market, Bac Ha Market, located 36 kilometers from Lao Cai, is another spot I recommend experiencing.Bac Ha MarketThis market gathers many hill tribes selling food, goods, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It still maintains a traditional atmosphere despite many tourists visiting, preserving the charm of various hill tribes well.

I once explored this market in detail and saw hill tribe people dressed in colorful traditional costumes, leading horses or carrying goods bought from the market back home. There are local food stalls mainly selling pork offal, which I dared to try following local recommendations. I also tried sugarcane with soft skin that can be peeled with teeth like in childhood. These small experiences made me feel more connected to this place.

Traveling from Lao Cai to Sapa and tips for travelers

For those planning to go to Sapa, I want to share my direct experience. Traveling from Lao Cai train station to Sapa by van should cost about 50,000 dong or around 75 baht, but I was charged 200,000 dong or about 300 baht, which is overpriced. If you are patient and not in a hurry, I recommend walking to the Lao Cai bus station on the same road as the train station. Walk to the end of the road to find the bus station with vans to Sapa at cheaper prices.

Additionally, for those seeking travel information and tips on buying train or van tickets between Lao Cai and Sapa, I recommend reading the articleSapa City 2013andTrain from Yen Bai to Sapawhich I wrote in detail and will help you plan much better.

Local food and nighttime atmosphere in Lao Cai

After a tiring journey, I found that relaxing at a restaurant near the train station in the evening is very soothing. There are many restaurants and beer bars for tourists to choose from, offering a comfortable atmosphere before taking the train back to Hanoi or traveling to Sapa.

The food here includes authentic Vietnamese dishes and local menus blended with hill tribe culture, such as grilled button squid with a sweet aroma or chicken biryani with a unique character. If you are interested in authentic Vietnamese food, I recommend watching the clipsVietnamese Grilled Button SquidorVietnamese Chicken Biryaniwhich I have tried and filmed, so you can see the real atmosphere and flavors.

Summary of Lao Cai experience from mr.hotsia's perspective

For me, Lao Cai is not just a transit city or a transfer point to Sapa, but a city full of local character, with hill tribe lifestyles that remain traditional, the colorful Bac Ha Market, and a border atmosphere perfectly blended with Chinese culture.

If you want to experience the sincerity of northern Vietnam and see cultural diversity before visiting Sapa, try spending a night or two in Lao Cai. I guarantee you will have a unique experience and get to know this city from a perspective that most tourists overlook.
