Visiting the Thai Valley in Sapa: The charm of Tai people's lifestyle at Ban Ho

This time mr.hotsia returns to Sapa in Lào Cai Province, Vietnam to experience the lifestyle of the Tai community, locally called Tai people, in the valley named Ban Ho. Here, culture and nature still retain traditional beauty. Although some changes have occurred over time, the feeling of this journey remains warm and full of memories I want to share with everyone.

I hired a car from Sapa town heading to Ban Ho, about 20-30 kilometers. The route passes through beautiful mountain views of Sapa, with complex mountain scenery that I really like. Anyone who has followedMy journey from Yen Bai to Sapawill understand that visiting here is not difficult if well prepared. The shared car fare is less than 300 baht per person, which is very worthwhile for the experience gained.

Ban Ho: Suspension Bridge and Homestays Preserving Traditional Ways

Ban Ho is a Tai village known for preserving traditional lifestyles. There is a suspension bridge crossing a small river that immediately caught my eye. This bridge is not just a walkway but also a community meeting point. A small coffee shop is located at the end of the bridge, offering free wifi. I enjoy sitting there sipping coffee in the morning or evening to watch the daily life of locals crossing the bridge to work in their fields and gardens.

The village has several homestays welcoming tourists. I had the chance to stay in one, sleeping amidst peaceful nature, listening to birdsong, and experiencing the simple life of the Tai people. Although they speak limited Thai, they are warm and friendly like family. I also visited an elderly Tai woman I met years ago. She looked much older and barely recognized me but still smiled and gave me money to keep as a memento. This image reminded me of our enduring bond.

Best Time and Preparation for Visiting the Valley

If you plan to visit Ban Ho, mr.hotsia recommends arriving in the evening and staying overnight because daytime is very hot and most Tai activities start in the morning and evening. Walking around the village during these times is the best way to see the real lifestyle of the locals, including crossing the bridge to the gardens and chatting with cheerful villagers.

For groups of four or more, hiring a car from Sapa to Ban Ho and back is a cost-effective option. It saves time and expenses compared to multiple transfers. Importantly, you don’t have to worry much about bargaining as I have experienced unfair fares from the Lào Cai train station before. However, if you want to save money, you can try walking to the Lào Cai bus station to buy cheaper tickets, as I previously recommended inthe article about taking the train from Yen Bai to Sapa

Local Food and Culture at Ban Ho

At Ban Ho, meals are charged per person, mostly simple local dishes focusing on fresh ingredients from gardens and the area. I tasted Tai food including fresh vegetables, fish, and sticky rice eaten with a special chili paste recipe from the elderly woman. There is also a small village market selling local products and souvenirs, perfect for tourists who like unique gifts.

If you enjoy deep travel and want to experience the true lifestyle of the Tai community, Ban Ho is a destination not to miss. If you want affordable food in Sapa town before heading out, I recommend checking outthe cheap food zone in Sapawhich offers a variety of tasty dishes, ideal for recharging before visiting the village or going to Bac Ha market, a colorful hill tribe market with interesting food.
