Egg Tàu Hủ in Sóc Trăng: A Vietnamese dessert mr.hotsia must try
When talking about tàu hủ, many people probably think of a cold dessert with beans, ginkgo nuts, and sweet syrup. But this time in Sóc Trăng province in southern Vietnam, I, mr.hotsia, discovered an extraordinary tàu hủ because here theyadd braised boiled eggs into the tàu hủtoo!
Sóc Trăng province is a coastal province in the Mekong Delta that I have mentioned in the articleTravel Information for Sóc Trăng ProvinceGetting here is not difficult. I traveled from Ho Chi Minh City by bus with Mai Link company, which provides excellent service. Or if anyone wants to experience the local lifestyle, I recommend trying the boat crossing the river to nearby towns as I described inTraveling from Soc Trang to Tra Vinhwhich offers a chance to experience the vast Mekong River and friendly local people.
A Different Tàu Hủ That Stays in mr.hotsia’s Heart
I first encountered egg tàu hủ in front of a Chinese temple in Sóc Trăng. The atmosphere was filled with the scent of incense and chanting from the temple. This made me think that this shop probably inherited the recipe from the Chinese community living in the area, as Sóc Trăng has a harmonious community of Chinese and Khmer people.
The egg added to the tàu hủ resembles a braised egg cooked until the yolk is firm, with no fishy smell. The tàu hủ syrup is sweet and mellow, served cold and refreshing. The syrup and tàu hủ itself have a perfect richness. The braised egg is cooked to a soft but not mushy texture, adding a completely new twist to the tàu hủ I have ever eaten.
I, mr.hotsia, did not miss ordering it. Many locals also come here to eat, which is a sign that the taste meets the local standard. Egg tàu hủ with braised egg has become one of my favorite dishes in Sóc Trăng. If anyone visits this province, don’t forget to stop by and try it.
Sóc Trăng: A Small City Full of Cultural and Culinary Diversity
Sóc Trăng is not only famous for egg tàu hủ. I also enjoyed walking around the night market and morning market to observe local life. Here you can find interesting local dishes such asSticky Rice with Duck Toppingwhich perfectly blends Chinese and Khmer cultures. The sticky rice is topped with a special local sauce and served with crispy fried duck and duck offal. The flavor is spicy yet very balanced.
Additionally, there are ancient temples reflecting the Khmer culture in the area, such asKhmer Temple in Sóc Trăng Cityand the Clay Pagoda with its ancient architecture and beautiful art,Buu Son Tu Temple or Clay Pagodawhich I have visited.

The bus station is about 4 kilometers from the city center, and motorcycle taxis are available to get around the city and to various points easily.Sóc Trăng Bus Stationis a good starting point for exploring the city.
To experience the authentic local atmosphere, I recommend walking around the morning and night markets to see the real lifestyle of Sóc Trăng people. You can also try the fermented fish noodle soup, another local specialty I have written about.Fermented Fish Noodle Soup
