Tra Vinh Fighting Cocks: A local way of life still alive in southern Vietnam
When talking about fighting cocks in Southeast Asia, many people mainly think of Thailand, Myanmar, or Cambodia. But for me, mr.hotsia, seeing fighting cocks in Trà Vinh province, Vietnam, was a unique and memorable experience.Trà Vinhin Vietnam was a unique and memorable experience.
Going back to when I was a child in Bang Bo, almost every household raised fighting cocks as a community activity. These fighting cocks were not just ordinary pets but were like friends and part of the lifestyle. However, over time, this activity gradually faded due to social trends and technology.
But in Trà Vinh province, I found that fighting cocks are still popular and play a clear role in daily life here. They are raised at homes, in front of shops, and in markets. Even in the city area, you can see many fighting cocks strolling or sitting gracefully on motorcycles waiting for their owners.
Tra Vinh Fighting Cocks with Inch-Long Spurs
One thing I noticed and was very impressed by is the “spur” of the fighting cocks here, which is an important weapon in fights. The spurs of the cocks in Trà Vinh are very long and sharp, unlike anything I have seen elsewhere. The spurs are so long they can be measured in inches. This strength and length make the fighting cocks here distinctive and beloved by people.
I strolled through Trà Vinh city in the early morning, with soft sunlight filtering through roadside trees. I saw a fighting cock sitting calmly on a motorcycle seat. Its owner, who runs a fresh cow milk shop in town, was sipping coffee nearby. I didn’t miss the chance to take photos and capture this atmosphere as a true reflection of Trà Vinh’s way of life.
Trà Vinh: A Coastal Province in the Mekong Delta
For those interested in experiencing what I did, Trà Vinh province is located in the Mekong Delta. It is a large sandbank surrounded by the Co Chien River to the north and the Hau River to the south. The province is about 200 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City and about 100 kilometers from Cần Thơ.
I traveled here by motorcycle crossing the Hau River, then took a boat to the river’s central sandbank before continuing by bus to Trà Vinh city, the provincial capital with a quiet and simple atmosphere.
This city has nearly 30% Khmer population, giving the local culture and food a unique character, such as boiled corn, a popular snack I tried when I got off the bus at the Trà Vinh market.Boiled Corn in Trà VinhSweet, soft, and piping hot, a taste that stays with me every time I mention it.
Trà Vinh Market: A Hub of Local Life and Food
To truly experience the local atmosphere, don’t miss walking throughthe morning and evening fresh markets of Trà Vinh city, which are two adjacent markets stretching along the Trà Vinh River. The first market is “Trà Vinh Market,” with zones selling fruits, fish, dried goods, pork, and chicken. The second, “Cho Bach Dang,” is smaller but full of vibrant locals selling fresh produce naturally.
I especially liked the fish-selling area by the riverbank, where locals sell just a few fish according to their needs, creating a simple and warm atmosphere, unlike larger markets that seem overly organized.
Snakehead Fish Noodle Soup: A Breakfast I Loved in Trà Vinh
Another local dish I enjoyed was “Snakehead Fish Noodle Soup.” This shop is in front of a coffee shop. I ordered the soup with large boneless fish pieces, which tasted great and deserved the steady stream of customers. I even ordered extra fish meat for 15 baht to enhance the flavor.
While eating the noodle soup, I saw Trà Vinh locals returning from the market carrying fresh goods, pork, and chicken passing by. This atmosphere is what mr.hotsia loves most about traveling.

Traveling to this province is not difficult, and once here, you will feel like stepping back in time to the old days of Southeast Asia, where the sound of fighting cocks still echoes in the morning and the aroma of fresh coffee from the cow milk shop blends with the riverside market atmosphere.
