Morning-Evening Fresh Market in Tra Vinh City (Tra Vinh Market): A Mekong Riverside Lifestyle Not to Miss

If you have the chance to visit Tra Vinh Province, located in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, like me, mr.hotsia, who has traveled through this province many times, you will immediately feel its unique charm that clearly differs from other southern Vietnamese cities, especially the fresh market which is the heart of the local lifestyle here.

The Tra Vinh market is divided into two adjacent markets in the riverside city center. The first is the “Tra Vinh Market,” a large market stretching along the road from the city roundabout to the riverbank, clearly divided into zones such as fresh fruit, fish, dried goods, pork, and chicken, all systematically separated. However, if you have visited many markets in Vietnam, you might find this large market quite ordinary without anything particularly outstanding.

But if you walk along the riverbank from the large market about 100 meters to the right, you will find “Cho Bach Dang,” a small market full of color and lively atmosphere. This market is where locals naturally sell fresh goods from the river and gardens without zoning or organization like the big market. This is my favorite spot, mr.hotsia, because it reflects the true lifestyle of Tra Vinh people who still live simply and sustainably.

Riverside Lifestyle at the Morning-Evening Market

Early morning at Cho Bach Dang Market is the liveliest time for locals. You will see Khmer women, who make up nearly 30% of the community in this province, selling fresh fish from the river in small quantities, just enough. Sometimes it’s a large freshly caught snakehead fish or fresh pork and chicken raised by locals. This market focuses not on wholesale like the big market but on freshness and friendly relationships between buyers and sellers.

I, mr.hotsia, once got off the bus in front of this market after traveling from another province, crossing the Hau River by boat, then taking a motorbike into town to experience the riverside fresh market atmosphere. I tried the “boiled corn” sold in rows here, famous for being very sweet and delicious from my experience tasting it in several provinces around the Mekong Delta.Read more about boiled corn in Tra Vinh) and I can say the taste here truly does not disappoint.

Local Food at and Around the Market

Tra Vinh Market doesn’t just offer fresh fish, pork, and chicken but also local dishes I, mr.hotsia, really like such as “Snakehead Fish Noodle Soup” at a small shop in front of a coffee shop near the market. It’s a dish I successfully ordered with full fish meat and no bone problems. The large pieces of snakehead fish are tender and very fresh. I ordered extra fish meat for just 15 baht. Eating there, watching people shop and carry goods, really gives the feeling of a true riverside market.Read more about snakehead fish noodle soup in Tra Vinh)

Another charm often seen in this area is the “fighting cock,” a popular pet in many countries in this region including Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam itself. The fighting cocks in Tra Vinh have very long spurs, unlike anywhere else I’ve seen, often seen standing on motorbike seats in front of fresh milk shops in town. Getting to and Accessing Tra Vinh Market

For travelers interested in visiting Tra Vinh Province, the journey is not complicated. If you come from Ho Chi Minh City or Can Tho Province, you can take a bus toTra Vinh Bus Stationwhich is about 7 kilometers from the city center. Then easily take a motorbike taxi into town. Alternatively, if traveling by boat across the Hau River and then taking a motorbike on the river island’s sandbar, you can conveniently reach the city.

Once in Tra Vinh city, the morning-evening fresh market along the Tra Vinh River is one of the places I, mr.hotsia, recommend for a walk to truly experience local life, including buying fresh goods, tasting local food, and seeing the simple yet colorful riverside lifestyle.

Accommodation and Amenities Recommendations

For those who want to stay overnight to fully experience the market and Tra Vinh city atmosphere, there are accommodations ranging from small hotels in the city to riverside resorts. I recommend checking more information atHotels in Tra Vinhto plan your stay according to your style.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

The morning-evening fresh market of Tra Vinh city is not just an ordinary market but one that deeply tells the lifestyle and culture of the Mekong riverside people. For me, mr.hotsia, the small but vibrant Cho Bach Dang Market is my favorite spot because it feels like stepping back in time to experience a truly simple lifestyle, something many might have forgotten in larger markets that focus more on wholesale or convenience than tradition.

If you enjoy visiting markets, trying local food, and want to experience the real life of Tra Vinh people, this morning-evening fresh market is an option you should not miss.
