Hanoi is the northern hub of Vietnam, so I often stop here. Each trip to Hanoi involved traveling by bus and by plane. For this trip, I flew with Lao Airlines.
Traveling with Lao Airlines from Vientiane to Hanoi costs about 4000 Baht per person. Tickets can be booked at agents in downtown Vientiane. Upon arrival in Hanoi airport, you can get to the city by various means such as shuttle van, public bus, or taxi. I recommend taking the public bus because it is economical. Although it takes a bit longer, it is worth it. Sometimes shuttle vans wait up to 2 hours before departure.
It depends on when the shuttle van is full before it leaves. Taxi stands are expensive. Bus line 17 is located in front of the airport; the departure point may change but remember line 17. The fare is 7000 Dong per person. This is the method Mr.Hotsia recommends. The recommended accommodation area in Hanoi by Mr.Hotsia is the Old Quarter, a popular zone for backpackers. There are many affordable hotels in convenient walking locations.
Hotel prices in Hanoi today average between 500 to 1000 Baht per night. Prices are quoted in US dollars, so bringing dollars is more cost-effective. However, if staying several days, exchanging dollars to Dong at the airport can yield a better rate. Mr.Hotsia recommends cheap and good hotels in Hanoi's backpacker zone, where many hostels and budget hotels are available for walk-in guests.
Compare prices before checking in without prior booking or book accommodation before traveling. Mr.Hotsia has passed through Hanoi where competition is fierce. Ticket agents sell travel packages to Sapa and Halong Bay. Hotels in the backpacker alley actively attract customers. This competitive environment benefits guests with the best prices. Here is what I recommend upon arriving in Vietnam:
1. Exchange money at Hanoi airport by checking exchange rates at various banks and choosing the best rate. 2. If staying in Vietnam for a week or more, buy a SIM card with internet access. Ask staff to install it for you to enjoy easier communication with friends and internet use for updating Facebook and watching YouTube. For tourists planning to visit Sapa or Halong Bay,
I recommend buying a tour where you can choose the best value price. I tried traveling by myself from Hanoi to Sapa, but all sleeper train tickets were fully booked by tours or other sources. Therefore, the most convenient way is to buy tours from widely available companies. Best value.
