Mr.Hotsia stayed in Dien Bien Phu for two days at the end of 2012, which is winter season in Thailand but it was raining in Dien Bien Phu, so I stayed two nights there and then took a bus from Dien Bien Phu to Son La Province.
The route passes through high and complex mountains, similar to the way to Pai in Thailand. Along the way, you will see Thai Dam villages continuously. People wearing full traditional Thai Dam costumes walk along the roadside, and there are rice fields in the plains seen intermittently. I really like the atmosphere of this Thai Dam route; just enjoying the view is worth it. You get to see the lifestyle, rice fields, mountains, buffaloes. Son La city is about 150 kilometers from Dien Bien Phu. I arrived in Son La city, the capital of Son La Province, in the evening.
The bus departs Dien Bien Phu at noon. The bus station is 7 kilometers away from the accommodation area. Don't think about walking; it's far. Taking a taxi is not expensive and there is no tendency to overcharge. This city is far from tourists, the locals are friendly, and it is very worth visiting. I recommend walking away from the bus station, turn right after leaving the station, walk around a bit, then call a taxi into the city. Accommodation is near Son La market. Many places listed in the Lonely Planet guidebook have closed, so you can stay where I stayed.
