Then I join in eating, observe what they order and eat, and politely point to the dishes I want. For someone like me who speaks only a little Vietnamese, this is the way to go. In Son La, street stalls have traditional Vietnamese pipe tobacco for smoking outside the shops, similar to Dien Bien Phu. Street vendors sell Vietnamese curry rice with boiled vegetables as a side dish. Mr.Hotsia recommends the Vietnamese stir-fried tofu, which is popular and truly delicious. A plate served over rice costs about 30 baht.
For desserts, locals enjoy fried vegetables and fried batter, similar to our banana fritters, with a tempting yellow color. These are sold in front of the market—try some. Vietnamese sticky rice dumplings are also available. Fried spring rolls in Son La are sold at street food stalls and are a local favorite. In Son La, I saw only one grilled chicken and pork stall, with thick smoke rising. Mr.Hotsia found the steamed fish with herbs very appetizing (Vietnam Fish Steam).
