I took a late morning train arriving at Lao Cai train station near dusk, then took a van from Lao Cai train station to Sapa. I was overcharged 200,000 VND for the van fare. Actually, the fare from Lao Cai train station to Sapa is 50,000 VND per person. Vietnamese locals or patient foreigners can get this price.
I recommend walking to the Lao Cai bus station located on the road parallel to the train line, walk to the end, and then take a van to Sapa from there. You can get the fare for 50,000 VND or 75 Baht, or try to negotiate to get 50,000 VND (van). For the return trip, you can buy a van ticket from Sapa to the train station for 50,000 VND per person. The van will pick you up directly from your guesthouse, so you don’t need to go to the Sapa bus station near the lake, as the price is the same.
Regarding the Vietnamese train, I took an air-conditioned van-style seat train, which is labeled as a tourist carriage on the ticket. It was clean and well-serviced. They sold boiled eggs and corn on the train, so no need to worry about hunger. Before reaching Lao Cai, there was an audio guide introducing Sapa tourist attractions in Vietnamese followed by English. To emphasize again, the fare from Lao Cai train station to Sapa is only 50,000 VND or 75 Baht. Tell them "Nam Muoi Ngan" or "50 thousand" to get the price.
If you don’t walk to the bus station, you might get overcharged like me. Don’t ruin the reputation of Thai travelers.
