At first, I didn’t know what kind of bird it was or why it was so popular in Vietnam.
In northern Vietnam, from Hanoi up to Dien Bien Phu, even though I didn’t know at first, I recorded a clip to share. Later, I learned it is the Hwamei bird, also called the Crested Finch or Hwamei Finch. This bird is very popular in southern Thailand and is increasingly popular in other regions. The Hwamei bird’s song is truly beautiful. When I visited Vinh Phuc Province, in Vinh Yen city, there was a bird singing competition going on. Hundreds of birds were gathered together, and their sounds are still vivid in my memory. It is very popular here.
In the competition, everyone is asked to be quiet, then the birds are allowed to sing. Judges listen carefully and score. People seriously raise these birds and sell beautiful cages in the city. I think if you keep this kind of bird at home just to enjoy its singing without competing, it’s already delightful. However, there is an issue about the Hwamei bird’s origin. This melodious bird is listed in the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2535 (1992) as a protected wild animal.
According to the law, possession of this bird can result in imprisonment of up to 4 years, or a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. But currently, I don’t know if there have been any changes.
