Backpacking Southern Cambodia 4/41: Khmer Roasted Duck in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
When it comes to Khmer food that I, mr.hotsia, have experienced, Khmer roasted duck in Phnom Penh is one destination I never miss. Every time I visit this capital city, the fragrant aroma and taste of roasted duck at the central fresh market make me stop to try it every time. Khmer roasted duck has a unique character clearly different from roasted duck in other cities, both in terms of spices and marinating methods that give a mellow flavor with a slight sweetness, finishing with the aroma of authentic Khmer herbs.
This time, I, mr.hotsia, arrived in Phnom Penh after a bus ride from Siem Reap. The bus from Soraya Tour company that I specifically chose made the journey much more convenient. Although it took up to 6 hours, enjoying the scenery along the way made it not boring at all. If anyone is interested in more details about traveling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, you can read it in the articleTraveling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penhwhich I wrote in great detail.
Phnom Penh Central Market: A Hub for Roasted Duck and Local Delicacies
After unpacking, I, mr.hotsia, headed straight toPhnom Penh Fresh Marketwhich is the heart of local cuisine in Phnom Penh. Here, there is not only roasted duck but also fresh vegetables, fruits, spices, as well as fresh seafood and meats to choose from. The aroma of freshly roasted duck grilling in the market, the smoke rising from the grill, and the chatter of vendors create a truly lively atmosphere.
The Khmer roasted duck here is served in small roadside shops or can be bought to take away. I like to sit and eat at the small roadside shops because I get to see the local lifestyle up close and talk with the shop owners who recommend additional signature dishes such as hot sticky rice and a special duck dipping sauce made from tamarind and fresh chili. The taste of the roasted duck and the dipping sauce blend perfectly. It’s a small happiness that I, mr.hotsia, feel is worth the trip.
Riverside Lifestyle and Traveling in Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh is a city located by the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap River, which I have written about in the articlePhnom Penh Travel Information (Phnom Penh 2012)This city not only has historical tourist sites like the Royal Palace or the Killing Fields but also fresh markets and riverside restaurants that are part of the Phnom Penh lifestyle.
After enjoying the roasted duck, I, mr.hotsia, like to take a walk along the Mekong River to digest and enjoy the city’s atmosphere in the evening. Here, you will see locals docking boats along the shore, small cargo boats passing by, and the calls of street vendors. It’s a scene that reflects the simplicity and friendliness of the Khmer people very well.
Travel Tips and Roasted Duck Restaurant Recommendations
If you are planning to visit Phnom Penh and want to try roasted duck like mr.hotsia, I recommend choosing accommodation nearPhnom Penh Bus Stationbecause it is convenient for traveling to the fresh market and various food spots in the city, as well as easy to catch buses to other provinces like Takeo or Kampot, which I have recorded my experiences inBus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Provincefor those who want to continue the adventure.
For roasted duck restaurants that I like, there are many in Phnom Penh Central Market, but the one I often visit is a small shop located on a roadside alley near the market. It’s easy to spot by the rows of roasted ducks hanging in a line. The fragrant aroma hits your nose and the cozy atmosphere feels like eating at a friend’s home. The shop owner welcomes you with a smile and friendliness, making eating roasted duck here not just a meal but an experience of Khmer culture and friendship.
