Phnom Penh Stir-Fried Noodles, a local dish that mr.hotsia must recommend

Among my many trips, mr.hotsia arrived in Phnom Penh, the peaceful and beautiful capital city by the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers that connect together. Besides important tourist sites like the Royal Palace and the Killing Fields, this city has many other interesting things waiting to be experienced, including local food that I never miss trying. On my latest casual walk in Phnom Penh before heading home, I discovered a unique and delicious dish called “Phnom Penh Stir-Fried Noodles,” which I will share in this article.

Strolling in Phnom Penh and discovering a gem at the market near the Royal Palace

On my third trip to Phnom Penh, I planned to stroll leisurely, enjoy the city, and have a light meal. Unexpectedly, I found a crowded stir-fried noodle shop, a small place not far from the Royal Palace. Following the fragrant aroma of stir-fried noodles that hit my nose, I had to stop and check it out immediately. This shop is quite old, run by Chinese people in Phnom Penh. I noticed locals often call this dish “Vietnamese-style stir-fried noodles” or “Vietnamese noodle soup,” with noodles slightly different from our usual stir-fried noodles because they resemble macaroni stir-fried with bean sprouts. The highlight is a fried egg placed on top.

Atmosphere and flavor experience

The atmosphere in the shop was lively, filled with locals eating at full tables. Some bought takeout, and taxi drivers also came to order food to go. I watched the cook stir-frying the noodles continuously. The aroma of the pan and perfectly blended seasonings made me unable to resist ordering a portion to try myself.

The Phnom Penh stir-fried noodles I ordered had crispy bean sprouts that added freshness. The noodles were soft and smooth with a mellow flavor and authentic Khmer spices. It wasn’t spicy but very appetizing, finishing the whole plate. The fried egg on top was crispy outside and tender inside, perfectly complementing the noodles. I also ordered additional fried side dishes. In the end, I finished everything without leaving a single noodle.

Special highlights mr.hotsia wants to recommend

What impressed me about eating Phnom Penh stir-fried noodles this time was not only the delicious taste but also the atmosphere filled with both locals and tourists. Experiencing the daily life of Phnom Penh people through a simple meal like this is a unique experience not easily found in this Cambodian capital.

If you come to Phnom Penh and want to try something new, I, mr.hotsia, recommend you find a chance to taste Phnom Penh stir-fried noodles at least once. Whether you are a food traveler or someone who enjoys learning culture through cuisine, this dish will be a memorable flavor for you.

Connecting travel and other experiences in Phnom Penh

For tourists planning to fully explore Phnom Penh, traveling here is convenient by bus from many provinces such as Siem Reap or even continuing to Takeo province, which I have mentioned in my articles.Bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo ProvinceThe journey takes about 2.5 hours. Most buses here have air conditioning, but sometimes it’s not very cold, so be prepared.
