Phnom Penh Grilled Beef: A Street Charm You Must Try from the Heart of mr.hotsia

The first time I arrived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, I stayed near Ounalom Pagoda, an area full of vibrant life and some of the most enticing food aromas in the city. One thing that caught my eye immediately was “Phnom Penh Grilled Beef” or “Rotating Beef,” sold by many shops lined along the street. I saw them roasting a whole cow on a spit over hot fire, the fragrant aroma tempting me from afar. I decided I must try it at least once before leaving.

During the 4 nights I stayed in Phnom Penh, I passed by these grilled beef shops every day, watching the preparation process from building the fire to the skilled rotation of the beef by the street chefs. The smell of fire and the slowly cooking meat with its beautiful color was incredibly appetizing, even after several days. Finally, on the last night before heading to Battambang, I didn’t miss ordering a large plate of grilled beef with hot steamed rice to fully satisfy my craving.

Most grilled beef shops open from early evening, a lively time when locals gather to eat. The street atmosphere filled with chatter and the clinking of Angkor Beer or Ancher Beer glasses completes the experience. I personally liked Ancher Beer, which I tried in Siem Reap, so I chose it to drink with the grilled beef and was not disappointed.

The grilled beef is very tender, with a natural sweetness perfectly blended with the smoky aroma. The rich flavor made me order another plate. The price is somewhat high, about 150 baht per plate, but for the experience and taste, I think it’s very worth it.

The Evolution of Phnom Penh Street Grilled Beef in the Eyes of mr.hotsia

After my first trip in 2011, I had the chance to return to Phnom Penh several times and visited the same grilled beef shop, but found the atmosphere had changed a lot. The style of roasting a whole cow on the street has almost disappeared. Asking the shop owners and locals, I learned that the Cambodian authorities have banned roasting whole cows openly on the street as before.

Most shops now have to roast the beef behind the shop and then bring the cut pieces to the front to grill over fire. Although the selling method has changed, the taste remains delicious as ever, maintaining the reputation of Phnom Penh grilled beef that I love every time I visit.

Phnom Penh is a good starting point for travelers wanting to explore other cities and provinces in Cambodia, such as Takeo Province, which I reached by Soray Tour bus from Phnom Penh in about 2.5 hours.Read about buses from Phnom Penh to Takeo Province hereAlthough buses in Cambodia are not as comfortable as in some countries, they are a good option for exploring rural areas and small towns nearby.

For traveling within Phnom Penh, I recommend buying tickets through hotel or accommodation agencies, as the transport system in Cambodia can be somewhat difficult to navigate.Phnom Penh Bus Stationis a main hub with buses to various provinces and neighboring countries.
