Kampong Thom Local Food: Flavors mr.hotsia Never Forgets

Kampong Thom is a province I, mr.hotsia, have visited many times for personal reasons while traveling through to Preah Vihear province. This gave me the chance to stay overnight here. Of course, every visit I never miss exploring the local food. Kampong Thom is not a major tourist destination like Siem Reap or Phnom Penh but has its own charm, especially in food that perfectly blends Khmer flavors with familiar Thai tastes.

For traveling to Kampong Thom, I usually take a bus from Siem Reap to this city because it only takes about two hours. From Kampong Thom, it is much easier to continue by bus to Preah Vihear than taking a taxi directly from Siem Reap, which costs as high as 3,000 baht—a price I find excessively expensive. For more information about accommodation and travel, you can read further in the article.Traveling in Kampong ThomandRecommended Hotels in Kampong Thomthat I have reviewed.

Kampong Thom Style Rice with Curry: Thai Flavors in Khmer Land

Walking around the market and streets in Kampong Thom city, I found rice with curry shops offering a wide and interesting menu. Most dishes are very similar to Thai food, such as braised pork with a rich but not overly spiced flavor, or soups resembling our northern Thai curry stew. There are also dry stir-fried dishes tasting like stir-fried holy basil or curry leaves with a unique aroma. I think these rice with curry dishes are perfect for Thai people wanting to try new flavors while still feeling familiar and comfortable.

If anyone wants to explore markets and unusual foods in Kampong Thom, I recommend stopping byKampong Thom Marketwhich, although not very large, is bustling with fresh produce, vegetables, fish, and local goods. Especially the Khmer fish cakes I tried and loved, or the shaved ice with sugar palm juice that is refreshing and perfect for the hot atmosphere of this city.

Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish: The Delicious Symbol of Kampong Thom

This time I returned to the same Tonle Sap snakehead fish rice porridge shop I visited years ago. The Tonle Sap snakehead fish here is different from the ones at home because it comes from Cambodia’s large Tonle Sap lake. The fish is big, firm, and very fresh. The shop is located in the night market in front of Kampong Thom market. The atmosphere is simple like a roadside rice porridge shop at home but stands out with fragrant charcoal-grilled snakehead fish served hot with plain rice porridge, which I think is a perfect meal.

This snakehead fish is not as salty as the dried salted snakehead fish I used to eat as a child, which my family preserved for years. It has a slightly sweet taste and a charcoal aroma that makes the fish meat very appetizing. Anyone coming here who doesn’t try it is missing out. I have written a detailed review in an article.Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish Rice Porridgerecommended for anyone who likes this type of food to try.

The meal I had was paired with inexpensive red wine at the roadside rice porridge shop. The wine’s taste here is quite good and suitable for sipping alongside hot grilled snakehead fish. Anyone wanting to try the delicious Tonle Sap snakehead fish like me, mr.hotsia, I guarantee it’s worth it and unforgettable.

Kampong Thom Fried Rice: Another Dish Recommended by mr.hotsia

Besides rice with curry and grilled snakehead fish, I also tried Kampong Thom fried rice at a small shop near the elephant and tiger statues in town. The fried rice here is dry-style with Chinese sausage and various vegetables, stir-fried long enough so every grain is hot, giving a rich and balanced flavor without the greasiness of other fried rice I’ve had.

What I liked most was the fried rice that seemed more like dry roasting than regular stir-frying, which brought out the aroma of rice and seasonings clearly. This dish is served with a rich pho broth that completes the meal. I have shared this in an article.Restaurants in Kampong ThomIf anyone visits Kampong Thom, I recommend trying these. It’s another experience not to be missed.

Lifestyle and Eating Atmosphere in Kampong Thom

Kampong Thom is a city that still preserves a simple way of life. Most locals are farmers and fishermen connected to Tonle Sap lake. The evening market here is full of seasonal fresh produce and local foods hard to find in big cities. I, mr.hotsia, have walked around the market many times and really enjoy the atmosphere because I get to see the locals’ way of life and taste truly delicious food worth the price.

Many times I stopped to chat with vendors and had the chance to try unusual foods like Khmer fish cakes made with long bean wrapped in pieces. I find it more delicious and unique than our local fish cakes. There is also shaved ice with sugar palm juice that helps cool down on hot sunny afternoons.

If anyone wants to experience authentic street food atmosphere without focusing on fancy restaurants, Kampong Thom is a great choice. And if you need accommodation, I recommendStung Sen Garden Hotelwhere I stayed and was very impressed. It has air conditioning and internet, and the price is reasonable.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Delicious Experiences in Kampong Thom

For me, Kampong Thom is not just an ordinary transit city but a place with distinctive food flavors and an interesting lifestyle. The local food here is diverse and very suitable for Thai tastes, including Khmer-style rice with curry similar to ours, charcoal-grilled Tonle Sap snakehead fish that is unique, and dry fragrant Kampong Thom fried rice. Every dish I tried has charm and good memories I take back every time.

I hope anyone planning to travel to Cambodia and wanting to deeply explore local food will stop by this small town of Kampong Thom. I guarantee you will experience unique deliciousness like no other.
