Recommended Hotels in Kompong Thom (Kompong Thom Hotels) by mr.hotsia
Kompong Thom is a small town in Kompong Thom Province, Cambodia, and a popular stopover for travelers journeying from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh or heading toward Preah Vihear Province. Although not a major tourist destination, for me, mr.hotsia, Kompong Thom has its own charm with its simple local atmosphere and abundant natural surroundings.
When it comes to accommodation in this town, I found there are not many options—less than ten in total. The main tourist shuttle stops are usually near the two major hotels that I will recommend next.
Arunrat Hotel, a Large Hotel in the City Center
Arunrat Hotel is located in the heart of Kompong Thom and is also known for its restaurant. Room rates are about 450 baht per night, which is reasonable considering the service and its location near the market and important sites.
However, I noticed that food and coffee prices at the hotel's restaurant are somewhat higher than typical local eateries. Regarding internet, Arunrat Hotel does not offer Wi-Fi inside the rooms; guests must use the lobby area for internet access.
Stung Sen Garden Hotel, a Hotel by the Stung Sen River Bridge
On one of my visits to Kompong Thom, I stayed at Stung Sen Garden Hotel, located at the neck of the Stung Sen River bridge. This hotel stands out with its river views and peaceful atmosphere, ideal for those seeking true relaxation.
The rooms here have twin beds, suitable for friends traveling together or small families. Importantly, wireless internet is available in the rooms, which is quite convenient for those who want to stay connected without going out.
Small Guesthouses in the Alley Next to the Bridge
Besides the two big hotels, about 4-5 small guesthouses are located in the alley just past the Stung Sen River bridge, mostly on the left side of the road. I explored briefly and found their room rates cheaper than the larger hotels, but I am unsure if they offer in-room internet. For budget travelers who are not particular about amenities, it might be worth inquiring.
Tips for Choosing a Room from mr.hotsia's Experience
From my personal experience choosing accommodation in Kompong Thom, I have a few tips for all travelers: if your chosen room is large but the air conditioner is small, it might not cool the room adequately, especially during Cambodia’s hot and humid summer nights.
Another important point is the bathroom condition. Standing water can breed mosquitoes, which will annoy you at night. I recommend turning on the air conditioner and checking for odors before deciding to stay, as sometimes cigarette smells trapped in the AC can be stronger and less comfortable than a new unit.
If you find the room is not as good as expected, don’t hesitate to request a room change immediately. Once you unpack, you’ll likely be reluctant to move later. I’ve had this experience several times in Kompong Thom and want to help friends prepare in advance.
Experience Local Life and Food in Kompong Thom
After settling your accommodation, I suggest taking a walk in the Kompong Thom market, which is close to the hotels. This evening market is not very large but offers a variety of goods, from fresh fish and vegetables to local dishes like Khmer fish cakes and shaved ice palm sugar desserts that I have mentioned in my articles.Kompong Thom Marketas previously described.
If you want to try Kompong Thom’s famous local food, I recommend tasting the grilled snakehead fish from Tonle Sap at the night market in front of Kompong Thom Market, which I have written about.Snakehead Fish Porridge from Tonle SapThe fish is grilled over charcoal until fragrant, with a slightly sweet and not overly salty taste. Served with hot rice porridge, it’s delicious and worth sharing.
Don’t Miss Trying “Kompong Thom Fried Rice,” a Delicious Local Dish
For dinner, don’t miss “Kompong Thom Fried Rice,” locally called “Bay Cha,” which I have recommended in my articles.Restaurants in Kompong ThomThis fried rice is cooked dry, mixed with Chinese sausage and various vegetables, stir-fried until the heat penetrates the rice grains, giving a slightly crispy texture different from the usual moist fried rice. What’s better is it’s served with a rich pho broth that refreshes the palate.
Easy Travel and Comfortable Stay in Kompong Thom
Kompong Thom Province lies on the main route between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Travel is convenient with multiple daily buses and minibuses. It takes about 2 hours from Siem Reap. For me, mr.hotsia, staying one night in Kompong Thom before continuing the journey is a good rest, allowing you to experience authentic Khmer life and taste local dishes you might miss if traveling directly.
If you are looking for accommodation in Kompong Thom, don’t forget Arunrat Hotel and Stung Sen Garden Hotel that I recommend, as well as exploring small guesthouses near the Stung Sen River bridge to experience different atmospheres and traveler-friendly prices.
