Pike Congee from Tonle Sap, a Signature Dish of Kompong Thom, Cambodia

When I think back to my childhood memories, one vivid image I recall is rice farming in the pond in front of the house. My family used to raise thousands of pike fish in that pond to preserve food for a long time. The method was to make salted dried pike fish by adding just enough salt—not too salty—then drying it completely before storing it in a cool, dark earthenware jar. This method allowed us to eat pike fish for over a year without refrigeration. This is the sustainable and valuable wisdom of our ancestors.

When I traveled to Kompong Thom province, located on the northern shore ofTonle Sapone of the largest freshwater lakes in ASEAN, I saw large pike fish hanging in rows at various markets. This image reminded me of home and the abundance of fish in this lake, an unforgettable memory.

In Kompong Thom, I tried grilled Tonle Sap pike fish at the night market in front of Kompong Thom market. It was a small, simple roadside congee stall full of community warmth. Several dried pike fish hung in front of the shop. The lady vendor spoke some Thai, which made ordering and chatting much easier. I ordered freshly grilled pike fish over charcoal right after it was done. The aroma of the charcoal and the slight sweetness of the fish meat made me enjoy it with hot congee until I lost track of time.

The pike fish here is not as salty as what I used to eat in childhood but has a gentle sweetness and freshness. Another special feature is the charcoal grilling that gives a unique aroma, making the fish slightly crispy on the outside and tender and juicy inside. It is eaten with plain white congee sold for about 10 baht per bowl. The grilled pike fish is sold by the kilogram; the one I ate cost about 180 baht, which may seem a bit high here but is worth the taste and freshness.

At first, the lady charged me about 15 US dollars, but I asked her to recalculate, and I paid only about 10 dollars. It should be noted that in Kompong Thom, using US dollars is common and usually offers better prices than paying in Cambodian riel. So if you plan to visit here, mr.hotsia recommends preparing small US dollar bills for convenience and to save costs.

Lifestyle and Kompong Thom Market with Interesting Local Dishes

Kompong Thom is a province not yet crowded with tourists compared to popular destinations like Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. I once stayed overnight here while traveling to Preah Vihear province, which gave me the chance to stroll aroundKompong Thom Marketin the evening, filled with a warm community atmosphere. Various shops offered fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and a variety of local foods to taste.

At this market, I came across fried fish cakes wrapped in long bean pods, a surprisingly delicious and unique Khmer dish. I also tried shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, a sweet and refreshing treat, while chatting with friendly and smiling locals. Experiencing this lifestyle made me love and understand Khmer culture more deeply.

For other local dishes in Kompong Thom, I recommend tryingKompong Thom Fried Ricealso known as “Bay Cha,” a dry fried rice mixed with Chinese sausage and various vegetables. The flavor is mild and goes well with hot pho soup at roadside stalls in town. It is another must-try dish for local food lovers.

Travel and Accommodation in Kompong Thom

Traveling to Kompong Thom is very convenient from Siem Reap, taking about 2 hours by bus. There are several daily departures with both air-conditioned and regular buses, costing around 7 US dollars per ticket, which is affordable for interprovincial travel in Cambodia.

In Kompong Thom town, accommodations are limited, mostly small hotels and budget guesthouses. mr.hotsia once stayed atStung Sen Garden Hotellocated near the Stung Sen River bridge. This hotel offers Wi-Fi in rooms and a quiet atmosphere, suitable for travelers seeking a comfortable rest.

If you enjoy Kompong Thom local food and want to experience community life, I recommend trying grilled Tonle Sap pike fish with hot congee at the night market. I guarantee you will have unforgettable flavors and warm memories just like me, mr.hotsia.
