Kampong Thom Market: Experience the Local Lifestyle and Flavors of Cambodia
When talking about Kampong Thom province in Cambodia, many might think of the town located between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. But for me, mr.hotsia, Kampong Thom is not just a simple stopover. It has a small charm that is very interesting, and one of my favorite places isKampong Thom MarketA small evening market full of colors and the lively spirit of the local people here.
Kampong Thom Market is not as large as markets in big cities, but it has its own lively atmosphere. Locals bring fresh goods such as fish, vegetables, and fruits to sell on the street, creating a warm and friendly environment. I walked into the market in the evening when many Kampong Thom residents were out shopping. This market is not just a fresh market but also a community gathering place.
Kampong Thom Market is located next to a dry goods and agricultural equipment market, so there is a steady flow of people throughout the day. I strolled around, explored, and tried the enticing local food like fish cakes wrapped in long beans, a Khmer local dish not commonly found elsewhere. The aroma of the fish cakes combined with the crispy outside and soft inside of the long beans was so good that I had to ask for another piece.
Another dish I didn’t miss trying was “Jawtal Shaved Ice,” a local dessert that helps cool you down in the bustling market atmosphere. I also had the chance to chat with the Kampong Cham locals while filming, which made me truly feel the warmth and friendship of the people here. The video clip I recordedwill give you a clearer picture of the fun and daily life of this market.
Travel and Accommodation in Kampong Thom
Traveling to Kampong Thom province is convenient. If you come from Siem Reap, it takes about 2 hours by car. If you start from Phnom Penh, there are minibuses and shared taxis available at affordable prices with multiple departures daily. From my experience, mr.hotsia, I chose to take Soraya company’s air-conditioned bus, costing about 7 USD, though sometimes the air conditioning might not be very cold.
When arriving in Kampong Thom town, I recommend staying atStung Sen Garden Hotelwhich is located near the Stung Sen River Bridge. This hotel offers comfortable rooms with Wi-Fi, allowing me to continuously update my travel stories. It’s also close to the market and dining areas, making it convenient to stroll around or try local food in the evening.
Local Food and Must-Try Flavors in Kampong Thom
Speaking of Kampong Thom’s local food, I recommend you tryKampong Thom Local Disheswhich are similar to Thai food but with distinct Khmer characteristics, such as rich-flavored braised pork, or 'Aom' curry with the aroma of local herbs, and dry stir-fry with the scent of cumin and perfectly balanced spices. There is also grilled giant snakehead fish from Tonle Sap lake, which I wrote about inthe Tonle Sap Snakehead Fish Porridge articlewhich left a strong impression on me. The large snakehead fish grilled over charcoal with fragrant aroma, eaten with hot rice porridge, is an unforgettable combination.
If you stroll through Kampong Thom Market in the evening, don’t forget to try the fish cakes wrapped in long beans that I stopped to taste, or find the “Jawtal Shaved Ice,” a refreshing dessert that cools you down on hot days. There is also Kampong Thom fried rice, locally called “Bay Cha,” stir-fried dry with Chinese sausage and various vegetables, with a mild flavor, served with fragrant pho soup. It’s another meal I want you to experience when visiting this town.Read more about restaurants in Kampong Thomhere
