Bokor Mountains, the historic mountain range of Kampot

If you ask me, mr.hotsia, about the most amazing and uniquely charming places in Cambodia, the answer must includeBokor Mountainsor Bokor Mountains will definitely be on the list. This place is not just a high peak with beautiful views but is full of historical stories, mysteries, and an atmosphere similar to Thailand’s Phu Kradueng, but even more special because from the summit you can see the sea nearby. It’s a must-see destination at least once in your life.

The ascent to Bokor: a path of history and breathtaking views

Bokor is located in Kampot Province, which I have recommended many times (read more atKampot Province Travel Information). Traveling here is much easier than in the past because the road up Bokor was built during the French colonial era around 1921. This paved road winds up the mountain, with some steep sections and cliffs similar to Phu Kradueng that I have visited. Bokor is about 1,000 meters high, slightly lower than Phu Kradueng at around 1,200 meters.

The atmosphere on the way up is filled with lush tropical rainforest, the cool moist mountain air, and the scent of wet earth, which refreshes me immediately as I start driving up. Importantly, the road is now well-paved, making the ascent much easier than before, with highlights including views of the sea and mountains along the way.

The past of Bokor: the abandoned French hill station

The story of Bokor is very interesting. About 90 years ago, during French rule in Cambodia, they builtBokor Hill Stationon this mountain summit as a cool retreat similar to Sapa in Vietnam. However, construction was difficult, with over 900 workers dying due to the rugged terrain and extreme weather changes.

The resort’s center was the Grand Bokor Palace Hotel & Casino, which included shops, a post office, a church, and even the residence of King Norodom Sihanouk. Today, only ruins remain for visitors to explore and imagine the past glory.

Afterward, Bokor was abandoned for several decades and was also the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge during Cambodia’s civil war. This quiet and mysterious atmosphere makes visiting here feel like stepping back in time.

The beauty and atmosphere at the summit

When I, mr.hotsia, reached the top of Bokor, I felt like I found “Phu Kradueng with a sea view” because the scenery was breathtaking. The cliffs offer panoramic views of the sea and coastline as far as the eye can see. The cool weather year-round is perfect for picnics, relaxing, or taking beautiful photos.

At the summit, there are old temples, beautiful waterfalls, and a new highlight is a private resort development project building 3- to 5-star hotels, a casino, a golf club, a hospital, and a cable car system to the summit. I see that in the future, Bokor will become a much more convenient and modern tourist destination.

Yay Mao: The giant woman statue and local legend

One thing that impressed me greatly during my visit was “Yay Mao,” a large statue of a woman on the summit, created as a symbol of protection for Bokor. According to legend, Yay Mao is a woman who played an important role in this area. The statue is located near King Sihanouk’s residence. Although it was not yet completed when I visited, it is an impressive spot perfect for memorable photos.

Recommended trip: Buy a tour from Kampot for a complete day trip

For those who want to visit Bokor without worrying about transportation, I recommend buying a one-day tour from Kampot town. When I went in January 2012, the price was about 10 USD, which included transfers, a guide, lunch, and a sunset boat cruise on the Kampot River (see details atSunset Boat Cruise on the Kampot River)

). Buying this kind of tour is very convenient and good value because you get to visit Bokor, waterfalls, temples, and experience riverside life in the evening, which I, mr.hotsia, found very impressive as it showed both nature and Khmer culture in the area.

Kampot Province: a peaceful town and simple lifestyle worth experiencing

After visiting Bokor, I recommend spending a night or two in Kampot town, which is only 1-2 hours from Bokor. Kampot is a peaceful province with friendly people, an interesting night market, and delicious local food (read more atNight Market Restaurant, Durian ShakeandKampot Durian)

). If you like authentic spicy Khmer food, don’t forget to try Kampot black pepper, which is very famous and a recommended souvenir by me, mr.hotsia (read about Kampot black pepper atKampot Pepper)

Summary and travel tips

Bokor is not just a high mountain with beautiful views but a place full of historical stories and an atmosphere blending nature with the colonial past that is fascinating. Visiting Bokor is like a journey back in time to experience true peace and natural beauty.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting early morning or late afternoon because the weather is cool and the light is perfect for photography. Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and shoes suitable for walking on paved roads that may be slippery in some areas.

Finally, if you visit Kampot, don’t forget to explore other interesting places such asPhnom Chhnork Cavewhich is nearby, and try local food in Kampot town. I, mr.hotsia, will definitely come back because this place has a truly unique charm.
