Phnom Chhnork Cave, Kampot Province: An Adventure into Cambodia's Mysterious Ancient Cave
When talking about Kampot Province, Cambodia, many people think of a peaceful town by the Kampot River filled with local lifestyles and lively night eateries serving delicious durian smoothies. But for me, mr.hotsia, visiting Phnom Chhnork Cave is an experience not to be missed when coming to this province.
Phnom Chhnork Cave is located about 8 kilometers from Kampot town. It is one of the tourist attractions I joined on a countryside tour and is quite an interesting destination because inside the cave there are ancient temple ruins built during the same era as Angkor Wat. The age and mystery of the temple inside this cave excited me from the very first step inside.
The Route to Phnom Chhnork Cave: Beautiful Views and the Challenge of a Dusty Road
Traveling to Phnom Chhnork Cave is a blend of rural natural beauty and the simplicity of local life. I took a tuk-tuk through small villages where people still live traditionally among rice fields and mountains. The road is a dusty dirt track, so it’s advisable to bring a face mask to protect against dust that might cause discomfort.
An important point to be careful about is choosing a tuk-tuk driver wisely. Sometimes drivers take you to other caves that are not Phnom Chhnork. Although on the same route, Phnom Chhnork requires turning left and going several more kilometers. Some drivers might take you to less interesting caves. Therefore, I recommend clearly stating that you want to go to "Phnom Chhnork" only to ensure your trip goes as planned.
Mystery and Ancient Architecture inside Phnom Chhnork Cave
Upon entering the cave, I felt the peacefulness and cool air inside. Even without a guide, it is safe to explore on your own because the cave has sufficient natural light and is not too dark.
What makes Phnom Chhnork Cave different from other caves is the presence of ancient temple ruins inside, built during the same era as Angkor Wat or Phnom Chhngok. The word "Chhngok" means "to peek" in Khmer, which has been mispronounced as "Chhnork" in some media like Lonely Planet, causing confusion. But the cave’s real name is "Phnom Chhngok."
The temple inside the cave is made of sandstone, with intricate details and carvings that still show the craftsmanship of that era. I explored various corners, admiring the carvings and temple structure, feeling like I traveled back in time to an ancient era full of faith and beliefs of the ancient Khmer people.
Fees and Safety Measures
Entrance to Phnom Chhnork Cave costs only 1 US dollar, which is very affordable for the experience. Tourist police officers collect the fee and ensure safety within the area. You can be confident that your visit will be safe and orderly.
