Kampot Province, Cambodia: Tranquility Filled with Charm and Local Lifestyle
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. I had the chance to experience Kampot Province, Cambodia, which is an important tourist province after Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Sihanoukville. It is located in the southeast of the country, with Kep Province about 50 kilometers to the south. Visiting Kampot made me feel the peacefulness and simple lifestyle of the Khmer people, which is clearly different from big cities like Phnom Penh.
Kampot Province is crossed by an important river called the CHHOU River, locally known as the Kampot River, which is the city's main artery. This river creates a fresh atmosphere perfect for evening strolls. The environment here is safe and the people are friendly. I found that quite a few Khmer people can speak some Thai, especially hotel staff and tuk-tuk drivers, which makes communication much easier for Thai tourists like me.
Getting to Kampot
For traveling to Kampot Province, I recommend taking an air-conditioned bus from Phnom Penh. Tickets are easy to buy at hotels in Phnom Penh. Buses depart twice daily at 7:30 AM and 1:15 PM, taking about 4-5 hours. If coming from Kampong Som or Sihanoukville, there is one morning departure daily, taking about 1-2 hours. Another option is a shared taxi, which can squeeze up to 6 Khmer passengers. I once took one from Sihanoukville for about 5 USD per person, which is very cost-effective if you negotiate well.
There are also tuk-tuk services to the border checkpoint at Hatien Province for 10 USD per person. This route is a beautiful rural path with salt fields and stunning nature along the way. If you want more adventure, renting a motorcycle to explore Kampot is an interesting choice. Although you need to be careful about the expensive vehicle deposit contract, it gives you full freedom to explore the city and surrounding areas.
Accommodation and City Atmosphere
Kampot offers a variety of accommodations, from budget guesthouses to good hotels. I stayed atKampot Guesthouselocated near the Cambodia-Vietnam Freedom Monument by the river. Here, one staff member speaks Thai well, which greatly helps with convenience. Prices start at about 10 USD per night. The surrounding atmosphere is filled with beautiful and charming old French architecture.
Most accommodations are near the river and the Durian Monument, the city center. If you stay on the opposite riverbank, you will find some guesthouses but it is difficult to find food without a motorcycle. Therefore, I do not recommend staying on that side for those who want to walk around and easily enjoy local food.
Experience Local Flavors and Night Market
One of Kampot's charms I don't want you to miss is tasting local food, especially aroundthe night market at the Durian MonumentAt night, small food stalls sell chicken rice porridge, snacks, and various smoothies. The atmosphere is lively and surprisingly warm. I really liked the chicken rice porridge here; it tastes great and there is a bottle of Kampot black pepper to add as you like. Kampot black pepper is fragrant and has a unique flavor, which I have described in detail in my article.Kampot Pepperrecommended to try adding for authentic deliciousness
Another highlight I must mention is Kampot durian, famous for its sweet and creamy taste comparable to our Monthong durian. The durians here are easily identified by a red spot on the stem. Most durians sold at the night market and in town are Monthong variety. I tried durian smoothies at the smoothie market in Kampot; the taste was rich and creamy, clearly different from fresh durian. Nearby Attractions and Local Activities
If you have more time than just walking around the city, I recommend visitingPhnom Chhnork Cavewhich is about 8 kilometers from Kampot city. This cave is a historically important tourist site because inside there is an ancient temple built at the same time as Angkor Wat. The journey to the cave passes through rural villages and beautiful Khmer rice fields. Although the road is dusty, bringing a face mask will make your trip much more enjoyable.
And if you love mountain adventures, don't forget to visitBokor MountainsThis was once a resort town built by the French to escape the heat on a mountain about 1000 meters high, offering sea views and beautiful nature. It also has interesting history related to the Khmer Rouge, which I have written about in a separate article.
Summary of Experience and Recommendations from mr.hotsia
Kampot Province impressed me a lot because besides its peacefulness, simple and friendly lifestyle, it also offers delicious and unique local food, as well as interesting natural and historical attractions. Traveling here is convenient though it takes some time, but every minute spent here is worth it.
If you like slow life travel, enjoy walking around cities, trying local food, and want to experience authentic Khmer lifestyle, Kampot Province is a great choice. mr.hotsia recommends you come and experience it yourself—you will surely fall in love just like I did.
