Kampot Durian, a delicious must-try when visiting Cambodia
When talking about Kampot Province in Cambodia, many people might think of peaceful tourist spots, simple lifestyles, and the famous black pepper production. But for me, mr.hotsia, another thing not to miss when visiting this province is “Kampot Durian,” a highly regarded fruit among travelers and locals alike.
Kampot Province is located not far from Trat Province in Thailand. The climate and nature are quite similar, which makes the durians here taste very much like the Monthong durian we are familiar with in Thailand. As I have read and seen myself in Phnom Penh, Kampot durians have a distinctive red spot at the stem, which is an important marker to identify authentic Kampot durians.
On one of my trips to Kampot, I, mr.hotsia, was determined to fully enjoy the durian, especially the Monthong variety, which is the main type here. Although there are other varieties, Monthong is the one I seriously tried. My first impression was that the taste was almost identical to the Monthong durian we know in Thailand — soft flesh, sweet and creamy, with an enticing aroma.
What impressed me even more was trying durian at a smoothie stall in the night market of Kampot. They blend fresh durian with egg yolk and sweetened condensed milk. The resulting flavor is a rich and smooth sweetness that is clearly different from eating fresh durian alone. It was a unique and memorable experience. If anyone is interested in trying this, I recommend visitingNight Market Durian Smoothie Stallright in downtown Kampot.
Kampot Durian... more than just a fruit, it’s a culture
In this region, Kampot durian is not only a fruit grown and sold by locals but also a part of the culture and lifestyle of the community. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit the night market near the Durian Monument in downtown Kampot and found Kampot durians widely sold both fresh and processed, such as fried durian, frozen durian, and the durian smoothies I tasted.
The prices are reasonable for tourists. I bought fresh durian at the night market for about 100 baht per kilogram, which is quite affordable considering the taste. To select Kampot durian, look for the red spot at the stem and choose fruits that are not overly ripe to enjoy the full sweet and creamy flavor.

How to travel and tips for visiting Kampot
Traveling to Kampot Province is easier than you might think. I, mr.hotsia, took an air-conditioned bus from Phnom Penh, which takes about 4-5 hours. There are two departures daily, morning and afternoon, making it easy to plan your trip. Most importantly, the safety and friendliness of the locals make the journey very smooth.
Once in Kampot, I recommend strolling through the night market in the evening. Besides tasting Kampot durian, you can also enjoy local dishes such as chicken rice porridge with Kampot black pepper, another specialty I reviewed inKampot PepperMost food stalls in the night market are small and do not serve full meals. Locals prefer to eat at home and come out for light snacks at the market.
My experience and impressions of Kampot durian by mr.hotsia
For me, Kampot durian is not just a fruit with sweet and creamy flavor but also a symbol of the relationship between nature and the community in Kampot Province. Traveling here to taste the durian made me appreciate the dedication of the locals who carefully tend their crops and take pride in what they have.
Kampot durian is a mark of deliciousness that comes from natural cultivation under suitable climate conditions and the care given by growers to every detail of their fruit.
If you plan to visit Cambodia, don’t forget to stop by Kampot Province and try Kampot durian. I guarantee you will love it as much as I, mr.hotsia, do.
