Eating Iron Beef with Rice Kampong Cham: A Unique Experience by the Mekong River with mr.hotsia
When mentioning Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, many might picture a peaceful town along the vast Mekong River. But for me, mr.hotsia, Kampong Cham holds another charm not to be missed — “Iron Beef,” a local dish that became an unforgettable eating experience when I visited the morning market in Kampong Cham town.
I started my day by exploring the fresh market by the Mekong River. The market here isn’t as large as in the capital but is full of life from Khmer locals buying and selling fresh produce, fruits, and ready-to-eat food. One thing that caught my eye was the iron beef stall next to a hot steamed rice vendor. The aroma of grilled beef on the hot iron plate wafted to my nose, and I couldn’t resist trying a plate.
“Iron Beef,” or in some Khmer areas called “សាច់ចៀនត្រចៀកដែក,” is thin slices of beef grilled on a hot iron plate similar to a clothes iron (hence the name). This grilling technique cooks the meat evenly with a slight char, giving a crispy outside and tender inside, infused with the aroma of oil and spices. Eating it with hot steamed rice and a slightly sweet, sour, and spicy dipping sauce makes for a simple yet flavorful breakfast I truly enjoyed.
I remember sitting by the market eating when many Kampong Cham locals came continuously to order iron beef. Some sat together at wooden tables beside the stall. It was a glimpse into a simple yet warm lifestyle, telling the story of a community firmly holding on to their traditional food.
For travelers planning to visit Kampong Cham, getting here is easy. I took the route from Siem Reap through Kampong Thom to Kampong Cham, which takes about two hours. Reliable bus services by Sory Company run regularly. There are also many affordable riverside accommodations with good atmospheres. I stayed at Mariya Hotel by the Mekong River, which offers comfortable rooms, Wi-Fi, and is close to the market and bus station — convenient for travel and authentic local food tasting.Read more about hotels in Kampong Cham)
After enjoying iron beef, I continued strolling through the Kampong Cham fresh market. I saw traditional Portuguese-style baked pastries from Kudi Chin, their fragrant aroma tempting passersby. Locals were eagerly buying them to take home. The food and pastries here not only nourish the body but also tell a fascinating cultural story blending Chinese and Portuguese influences.Read about Kudi Chin Portuguese Pastries at Kampong Cham Market)
Besides the iron beef breakfast, Kampong Cham offers other interesting local dishes such as Khmer fried rice, grilled chicken, and riverside papaya salad stalls in the evening. I visited some with great atmospheres where you can closely observe the riverside lifestyle of the locals.Khmer Food in Kampong Cham)
