Durian smoothie in Kampong Cham, a riverside city by the Mekong River you must try

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, a city located along the great Mekong River. This place offers not only beautiful river views and delicious Khmer cuisine but also a special treat many might not know about: the “durian smoothie.” It is a popular drink in this region that I tried and can honestly say is truly amazing.

At first, I noticed smoothie shops along the streets of Kampong Cham prominently displaying fresh durians at their storefronts, signaling the local popularity of durian smoothies more than elsewhere. I didn’t hesitate and ordered a glass to try immediately. The Khmer-style durian smoothie includes fresh coconut milk, perfectly sweet and creamy. Some shops add other fruits like mango or banana for extra freshness, but the durian flavor remains the star of this drink.

I have encountered fruit smoothies in Vietnam that use jackfruit as the main ingredient, which differs from Kampong Cham’s clear focus on durian. I also enjoy orange smoothies back home in Thailand, but honestly, the durian smoothie here gives a more authentic Khmer experience. For durian lovers seeking something new, this is a must-try that won’t disappoint.

Market Atmosphere and Riverside Lifestyle

Kampong Cham impressed me with both its atmosphere and the local way of life. The city sits beside the vast Mekong River, offering beautiful views perfect for leisurely walks. Near the Kampong Cham bus station, the night market area is lively, where I often stroll to sample local foods and various fruit smoothies, including the city’s signature durian smoothie.Kampong Cham Night Food MarketThis is a bustling spot where tourists and locals gather. There are many stalls offering papaya salad, fried chicken, stir-fried noodles, and a wide selection of fruit smoothies.

For breakfast, I usually recommend trying traditional Khmer dishes at the fresh market. Watching locals shop for fresh produce and food at a relaxed pace creates a close connection to the community. Travel and Accommodation in Kampong Cham

Getting to Kampong Cham is easy. I traveled from Siem Reap via Kampong Thom and then took a bus to Kampong Cham, which took about 2 hours. Traveling from Phnom Penh is also convenient, with direct buses between the two cities. For safe and comfortable travel, I recommend Soraya Company, a well-known Cambodian bus operator.

For accommodation in Kampong Cham, I usually choose places near the Mekong River. Besides beautiful views, these locations are close to the night market and bus station. I often stay at Mariya Hotel, which is affordable and offers Wi-Fi. Some rooms may require caution regarding mosquitoes and water drainage in bathrooms, but overall it’s a good value for travelers. The Appeal of Durian Smoothies in Kampong Cham

What makes the durian smoothie here stand out is the smooth texture of the durian pulp blended with coconut milk, creating a balanced, sweet, and creamy flavor that isn’t overly rich. The finely crushed ice adds refreshing coolness, perfect for Cambodia’s hot afternoons. Many smoothie shops have their own special recipes, such as adding pandan leaves or homemade palm sugar syrup, making each durian smoothie unique.

If you enjoy trying new and unusual flavors, the durian smoothie in Kampong Cham is a highly interesting choice. It also reflects the lifestyle and culinary culture of the Khmer people well. I, mr.hotsia, plan to return to savor it again when I have the chance to visit Kampong Cham next time.
