Temples in Kampong Cham: Nokor Bachey Temple - Explore the ancient site in the heart of Cambodia

When talking about Kampong Cham province in Cambodia, many might think of the fresh market by the Mekong River or authentic Khmer food, which I, mr.hotsia, have shared in previous articles.Khmer Food in Kampong ChamThis time, I want to introduce everyone to a place with ancient and historical value: Nokor Bachey Temple, located just 2.2 kilometers from Kampong Cham town.

Nokor Bachey Temple is an ancient site built in the mid-11th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit it myself. The atmosphere around the temple is full of mystique and echoes of the past reflected through the ancient architecture. The temple is located along National Road 7 when traveling from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham, about 122 kilometers away. The temple is on the right side before reaching the town.

Travel and Exploration at Nokor Bachey Temple

I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a tuk-tuk from the Kampong Cham bus station for convenience. The fare is not expensive. For those who prefer flexibility and want to experience the local atmosphere, renting a motorcycle is a good option, costing about 1 US dollar per trip. It's better to pay in dollars. Especially if you want the driver to pick you up afterward, it’s very convenient since there is no public transport passing by Nokor Bachey Temple.

That time, I did not hire a waiting vehicle at the temple but chose to walk and observe the local lifestyle nearby. From the temple, I walked to the main road, which was quite a distance. Along the way, I passed houses and roadside shops, witnessing the simplicity and warmth of the locals. Some greeted me in Thai because many here have worked in Thailand before. It was a new and friendly feeling, rare in typical tourist experiences.

The Beauty and History of Nokor Bachey

Nokor Bachey Temple is a fine example of ancient Khmer art that remains well-preserved after more than 1,000 years. The temple’s architecture is simple yet powerful, featuring sturdy stupas and gateways with carvings that tell stories about gods and ancient Khmer legends.

What I, mr.hotsia, liked most was walking around the stupa ruins and the peaceful temple grounds. The wind rustling through the leaves added to the feeling of stepping back in time. It’s perfect for photography enthusiasts or those seeking tranquility during their trip.

Connecting with Tourism in Kampong Cham

After visiting Nokor Bachey Temple, I recommend everyone stop by Kampong Cham town by the Mekong River. You might stroll through the night market or enjoy local food by the riverbank, which I have described in previous articles.Traveling in Kampong ChamandExciting Kampong Cham Trip 2016These markets offer a variety of Khmer dishes such as grilled chicken, curry rice, or Khmer stir-fried noodles with bold and balanced flavors. It’s a great way to recharge after temple sightseeing.

Recommended accommodations in Kampong Cham are along the Mekong River, with several budget-friendly hotels starting at about 13 US dollars, like Mariya Hotel where I stayed, featuring Wi-Fi and beautiful river views.Read more accommodation details hereIt’s important to exchange US dollars for use here, as dollars are accepted more conveniently and offer better value than riel.

Summary of Experience and Advice from mr.hotsia

Visiting Nokor Bachey Temple is not just about exploring ancient ruins but also a great opportunity to experience the authentic lifestyle of Kampong Cham people. The journey requires flexibility and interaction with locals, along with enjoying local food at fresh markets and by the Mekong River.
