Travel Kampong Cham, the Mekong River city I must return to again

When talking about traveling in Cambodia, Kampong Cham province is one of the destinations that mr.hotsia must say left an unforgettable impression. Kampong Cham is located on the northern route of Tonle Sap Lake, between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, about 130 kilometers from Phnom Penh. The city lies along the wide Mekong River that flows from southern Laos, through Stung Treng province, before reaching Kampong Cham. This makes the Mekong riverside views here beautiful and uniquely charming compared to other places.

Traveling to Kampong Cham

I chose to travel from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham using the bus service of Sorya Company, one of Cambodia's major bus companies. The route passes through Kampong Thom before arriving at Kampong Cham, taking about 3-4 hours. For those coming from Phnom Penh, it's not difficult as the distance is less than two hours. Buses depart regularly and are quite comfortable. Additionally, I recommend bringing US dollars because the local preference is for dollars over riel, and exchanging money beforehand will be more cost-effective.

Riverside Accommodation with Great Atmosphere and Reasonable Prices

The accommodation zone I chose is usually by the Mekong River because besides the great atmosphere, it is also close to the Kampong Cham bus station and the lively night market in the evening. The hotel I stayed at is called Mariya Hotel, a corner room by the river with windows opening to a wide Mekong River view. Prices start at about 13 USD per night. The rooms have Wi-Fi, but some rooms may have issues with mosquitoes and water pooling in the bathroom, so check carefully before booking. For those who want to book in advance, I recommend checking the information.Hotels in Kampong ChamThat I have previously written about.

Night Market and Food by the Mekong River

In the evening in Kampong Cham, the night market by the bus station is bustling with various food stalls including papaya salad, fried chicken, stir-fried noodles, and general Khmer dishes. There are tables to sit and chill by the Mekong River with a great atmosphere, perfect for those who enjoy watching the river view while tasting spicy local food. In the morning, mr.hotsia recommends trying made-to-order dishes at the fresh market, such as Khmer fried rice or bai cha, simple but flavorful dishes. Also, don't forget to try the durian smoothie that is widely sold here, made with coconut milk and ice, very refreshing. Experience Local Life and Ancient Temples at Nokor Ko Temple

Kampong Cham is not only about the city and food but also has interesting historical tourist sites like Nokor Ko Temple, an ancient temple built around the 11th century or nearly a thousand years ago. This temple is located not far from the village, surrounded by lush green rice fields. The atmosphere is very peaceful and sacred. I walked around the ruins and saw a barber shop under a tree in front of the temple, giving a feeling of stepping back in time. For those who love ancient temples and want to see the genuine lifestyle of Kampong Cham locals, this place is a perfect fit.

A City of Warm People and Everlasting Smiles

I was very impressed by the people of Kampong Cham. The locals here are cheerful and can speak some Thai, making communication easy. mr.hotsia had the chance to talk with many villagers both at the market and by the Mekong River. Their friendliness made me feel warm like being at home, and it is one of the reasons I intend to visit Kampong Cham again for sure.

Additional Recommendations for Cycling Enthusiasts

Kampong Cham is a city suitable for cycling around the small town because the roads are not too busy. Along the Mekong River, there is a constructed embankment with a beautiful paved walkway, fountains, and small gardens to rest. There are also Khmer massage shops open for tourists. If you want to experience a chill atmosphere and the authentic Khmer lifestyle, cycling in Kampong Cham is a great choice.
