Khmer Food in Kampong Cham: Riverside Flavors at mr.hotsia You Must Try
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, located along the vast Mekong River with its unique charm, both in scenery and local lifestyle. What impressed me most was the Khmer food found in restaurants around Kampong Cham market. This place is definitely a must-visit destination for food travelers.
Kampong Cham is a small but lively town, especially when it comes to food. Around Kampong Cham market, many restaurants line up offering various dishes, including grilled chicken and a variety of curries to choose from. There are comfortable tables to sit and eat, or if you want a chill atmosphere by the Mekong River, there are tourist restaurants right by the water. Prices are very reasonable, about 3 USD per dish, which is great value for the taste and ambiance.
For breakfast, I recommend strolling through the Kampong Cham fresh market to find made-to-order food or order Khmer fried rice at “Bay Cha,” a small shop highly recommended by locals. Their Khmer fried rice has a unique flavor, mild and different from ours, and it’s a dish I definitely give a thumbs up because it’s easy to eat and so delicious that I had to order it again.
By evening, the atmosphere by the Mekong River changes. I usually choose to eat like the locals at places serving som tam (papaya salad), fried chicken, or fried noodles near the night market in Kampong Cham town. The atmosphere is pleasant with a gentle breeze, making dinner here a special experience I won’t forget. I also enjoy walking around the night market to see the daily life of the locals up close.
Another food I saw sold all over Kampong Cham and many provinces in Cambodia is “small sun-dried snails,” which are dried in bamboo trays and sold at various stalls. Passersby often taste them and buy if they like the flavor. I haven’t tried them yet because I had a bad stomach last trip, so I’m being cautious. But I believe these sun-dried snails must be delicious. If you have a chance, don’t forget to try them.
Another impressive thing about Kampong Cham is the friendliness of the locals. Almost everyone here speaks Thai, which makes communication very easy for me without any language worries. Importantly, I advise all travelers not to gossip about the locals because they always understand Thai.
Here, I often order various ready-to-eat dishes to try together, most of which are similar to Thai food but the flavors might not be as strong or to everyone’s taste. However, if you order made-to-order fried rice at “Bay Cha,” the taste is better and more to my liking. It’s a recommended dish you shouldn’t miss when visiting Kampong Cham.
