Kampong Cham: A Riverside City Full of Life and Culture
When talking about Kampong Cham Province in Cambodia, many may not be very familiar with the name, but for me, mr.hotsia, traveling here is an experience full of interest and the true natural riverside life of the Mekong. This province is located on the route connecting Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The main city is a perfect stopover for travelers who want to experience authentic Khmer lifestyle and enjoy the vast Mekong River views.
I traveled from Siem Reap by bus with Soraya Company, a reliable and comfortable bus service. The journey takes about two hours only. The trip was easy, and upon arriving in Kampong Cham town, the first thing I noticed was the long and wide Mekong riverside view. The water flowing from the north through Stung Treng reaches here, making the Mekong riverside in Kampong Cham lively and a meeting point for locals and tourists.
Riverside Life and Night Market Not to Be Missed
One of Kampong Cham's charms that impressed me greatly was strolling along the Mekong riverside in the evening. There is a constructed embankment and paved walkway along the riverside, complete with fountains and various statues that create a lively atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Locals often come out to sit, chat, or cycle around the town in a relaxed pace unlike big cities.
If you are a foodie, I recommend visitingKampong Cham Night Food Marketlocated next to the main bus station of the province. This market is full of various local food stalls, from papaya salad with fried chicken by the Mekong riverside to unique Khmer stir-fried noodles. I have stopped here many times; the home-style flavors make you feel warm as if dining with local friends.
Khmer Food in Kampong Cham: From Morning Market to Riverside Dinner
When it comes to food in Kampong Cham, I, mr.hotsia, don’t want you to miss trying breakfast at the fresh market. Options range from simple Khmer fried rice to grilled chicken and freshly served curry rice. Some stalls have tables for a chill dining experience. The morning market atmosphere is full of colors from locals shopping energetically.
For dinner, the riverside atmosphere never disappoints. I usually choose to eat papaya salad with fried chicken or simple made-to-order dishes with many options. Don’t forget to try the sun-dried snails, which many say taste great. Although I haven’t tried them myself due to a previous severe stomach upset, I’m confident anyone who tries them will love them like the locals.

Riverside Accommodation: Comfortable and Affordable
Accommodation in Kampong Cham is not difficult at all. My favorite area is along the Mekong riverside because besides the beautiful views, it is also close to the bus station and night market. The hotel I usually stay at is Mariya Hotel, an affordable hotel starting at about 13 USD per night. The room I stayed in was riverside with Wi-Fi available. Although sometimes there are mosquitoes, it’s acceptable considering the price.

Easy Travel, Close to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh
One of Kampong Cham’s advantages is its uncomplicated travel and very convenient location. I like to take the route from Siem Reap through Kampong Thom to Kampong Cham. There are many bus lines here, and if coming from Phnom Penh, it takes no more than two hours. This makes Kampong Cham a suitable stopover for continuing travel to other provinces.
