Drinking Coffee at Kampong Cham Morning Market or Kompong Cham (កំពង់ចាម), Cambodia with mr.hotsia

If you have the chance to travel to Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, one thing mr.hotsia does not want you to miss is waking up early to drink coffee at the Kampong Cham morning market, or as the Khmer call it “Kompong Cham” (កំពង់ចាម). This market is not just an ordinary fresh market but a gateway to truly experience the life of riverside locals along the Mekong River.

First, I must say that Kampong Cham is located along the Mekong River. My route was from Siem Reap, passing through Kampong Thom, arriving at Kampong Cham city. I chose to stay at the riverside Mariya Hotel, which is not far from the morning market. You can read reviews and more details atHotels in Kampong ChamBeing close to the market made it very convenient for me to wake up early and truly experience the fresh market atmosphere here.

Kampong Cham Morning Market, the Start of the Day

Walking into the Kampong Cham morning market early in the morning, the first thing you notice is the fragrant aroma of roasted coffee filling the market. I looked for local coffee sold in small carts or tiny wooden stalls lined up. One of my favorite specialties is the “Khmer black coffee,” rich but not overly bitter, with nutty and traditional roasted aromas. Coffee here is usually served with toasted bread or simple local snacks, a perfect set to recharge before starting the day.

Besides coffee, the market is full of colorful Khmer foods ranging from hot rice porridge, Khmer fried rice which I have recommended inKhmer Food in Kampong Chamto grilled chicken with authentic Khmer spices. Locals and tourists alike sit at simple wooden tables in the market. Seeing this, you realize that this atmosphere cannot be found in fancy restaurants in big cities.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere Along the Mekong River

The Kampong Cham morning market is not just a place for fresh food trading but also a meeting point for locals to gather and exchange news and daily life stories. I saw elderly people chatting with warm smiles, women in traditional costumes selecting fresh vegetables, fruits, and freshly caught Mekong River fish. Here you will find large fish from the Mekong River famous in Kampong Cham, which I have recommended inLarge Fish of the Mekong River in Kampong Chamwith

While sipping coffee, I often stroll along the stalls and see freshly baked Portuguese-Chinese fusion pastries called Kudi Chin in the morning market. If interested, you can read the story about this pastry inPortuguese-Chinese Pastries at Kampong Cham Marketwhich I have written about before.

Travel and Real Experience from mr.hotsia

I traveled to Kampong Cham by Soraya bus, a major Cambodian company, with services from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to this city. It takes less than two hours, very convenient and affordable (more details can be read atTraveling Kampong Cham)

After drinking coffee and walking through the morning market, I usually choose to stroll along the Mekong River. The riverside in Kampong Cham has been developed into a relaxation area with paved walkways, fountains, and various statues, making it very relaxing. It’s perfect for cycling or walking in the fresh morning air.

Summary of Impressions from Kampong Cham Morning Market

For me, mr.hotsia, the Kampong Cham morning market is not just a market but a place that lets me truly experience the essence of Khmer life. The coffee here has become a symbol of a meaningful start to the day. Seeing locals cooking, selling goods, and chatting friendly makes me feel this trip was truly worthwhile.

If anyone plans to visit Kampong Cham, don’t forget to set aside time to wake up early and experience this morning market. Then you will understand why I say this place is an unmissable charm of this riverside city.
