Enjoy Kampong Cham Smoothies or Kompong Chhnang (កំពង់ចាម), Cambodia

When talking about Kampong Cham Province (Kompong Chhnang) in Cambodia, many may know it as a riverside city along the Mekong with beautiful views and a simple lifestyle. But for mr.hotsia, one thing I am impressed with and strongly recommend to try is the “smoothies” here. Not just ordinary smoothies, but authentic Khmer-style smoothies that blend refreshing flavors with just the right sweetness. Plus, they are very affordable, perfect for adventurous travelers like me.

I had the chance to travel from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham by Soraya Bus Company, which took about two hours. Before reaching the city, I started to see smoothie shops lining the roads and a bustling fresh market. At first, I wondered if the smoothies here would be like those in Thailand, but after tasting them, I can say they are very different. The flavors are rich and refreshing with real fruit, and importantly, there are many options to choose from, including mango smoothies, durian smoothies with a fragrant and mellow sweetness, and mixed fruit smoothies filled with fruit pulp.

Most smoothie shops are located in the Kampong Cham market where many locals shop. I recommend visiting in the morning because the fresh market is lively and offers authentic Khmer food to try, such as grilled chicken, curry rice, and Portuguese-influenced desserts with an interesting history, which I have written about in an article.Portuguese-influenced Desserts at Kampong Cham MarketSmoothie vendors are mostly street hawkers or small shops in the market and along the roads by the Mekong River.

One of the experiences that impressed me was sitting by the Mekong River sipping a smoothie, enjoying the vast peaceful view of the river flowing through Kampong Cham. The cool breeze mixed with the fresh fruit aroma from the freshly blended smoothie was energizing and gave me a deep connection to the Khmer lifestyle here.

Lifestyle and Culinary Diversity of Khmer Food in Kampong Cham

If you visit Kampong Cham, food is definitely a priority. This province offers a variety of traditional Khmer dishes, from made-to-order meals in the market to riverside restaurants serving tourists. Most meals cost about 3 US dollars per dish, which is very good value considering the taste and atmosphere.

I usually choose to have breakfast near the fresh market to experience the local atmosphere, such as Khmer fried rice with rich flavors or try bay cha (noodle soup) with a smooth taste and herbal aroma. For dinner, I often stroll through the night market next to the Kampong Cham bus station. The riverside evening atmosphere is very chill, with popular local dishes like papaya salad with fried chicken and Khmer-style stir-fried noodles unlike anywhere else.

For those who like to try something new, I have seen small sun-dried snails sold commonly in Kampong Cham markets. They look appetizing, but I haven’t tried them yet due to a previous experience with stomach upset, so I’m being cautious.

Accommodation and Transportation in Kampong Cham

For accommodation on this trip, I stayed at Mariya Hotel, located by the Mekong River. The rooms are affordable, starting at about 13 US dollars. Some rooms may have mosquitoes because of the natural surroundings, but Wi-Fi is available. It’s suitable for travelers who want a comfortable stay close to the market and bus station.

Traveling to Kampong Cham is very convenient. I took the route from Siem Reap through Kampong Thom and then used Soraya Bus Company to enter the city. This bus company is popular in Cambodia. Traveling from Phnom Penh takes only about 2 hours.

Experience the Charm of Kampong Cham through Smoothies and Riverside Lifestyle

If you ask mr.hotsia why I like Kampong Cham smoothies, the answer is that they are a small gateway that truly brings us back to the riverside community atmosphere of the Mekong. These smoothies are not just thirst-quenching drinks but part of the simple and friendly lifestyle of Kampong Cham people.

While drinking fresh smoothies by the river, I could hear market vendors speaking Khmer mixed with Thai occasionally, which felt very warm and welcoming. Here, Thai and Khmer people live closely together. If you want to know Kampong Cham deeply, I recommend reading my article.Khmer Food in Kampong ChamandTraveling in Kampong Chamthat I wrote earlier to plan your trip and dining comprehensively.

Finally, if you have the chance to visit Kampong Cham, don’t forget to try fresh smoothies at the market or small shops by the Mekong River. I guarantee you will have a delicious experience and a genuine feeling of the Khmer riverside life.
