Kampong Cham Fruit Smoothies or Kompong Cham (កំពង់ចាម), Cambodia

When talking about Kampong Cham province in Cambodia, many might picture the vast Mekong River and the peaceful riverside town. But for me, mr.hotsia, another charm of Kampong Cham is the local-style “fruit smoothies” that blend fresh ingredients with a sweet, refreshing taste. Here, they call these fruit smoothies Kompong Cham (កំពង់ចាម). If you stop by the fresh market or street stalls in the town center, I guarantee you won’t want to miss a glass.

My journey started with a bus ride from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham, taking less than two hours. The Soraya bus company, a major Cambodian transport provider I recommend for intercity travel, allowed me to see the lifestyle of people along the road and the changing nature on both sides. Upon arrival in Kampong Cham, my first destination was the central fresh market, a hub for fresh ingredients and a variety of local foods.

At this market, I found a fruit smoothie stall where the owner used fresh seasonal fruits blended together. Sometimes there would be ripe mango, banana, pineapple, or even durian smoothie, which I mentioned in a previous article (Durian Smoothie). In Kampong Cham, Khmer fruit smoothies are not just sweet but have a perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors, refreshing enough to forget the afternoon heat.

I remember sitting with a large glass of fruit smoothie by the market, watching people pass by—locals and tourists from the city or even Laos. Since some locals in Kampong Cham speak Thai, I could easily negotiate prices and ask about the ingredients. The fruit smoothies here are not just drinks but stories of culture and lifestyle told through flavor.

Riverside Lifestyle and Local Food

If you have read my articles aboutKhmer Food in Kampong ChamorTraveling in Kampong Chamyou will know that Kampong Cham has a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere along the Mekong River. I often spend evenings walking by the river, where many restaurants line up selling local dishes like som tam, fried chicken, or fragrant stir-fried noodles. The flavors are just as delicious as those I tasted at the fresh market during the day.

In the late morning, I often see locals and vendors selling small sun-dried snails in baskets throughout the market. These are small snacks I haven’t tried yet due to caution from previous trips about stomach issues. However, from observation, many people pick, taste, and buy them to take home, showing they must be tasty and popular.

For those who like sweets, I recommend visiting the morning market to try Portuguese-Chinese fusion desserts called "Kanom Farang Kudichin," an interesting blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures. Although I haven’t detailed this in my articles much, you can read more atKanom Farang Kudichin, Kampong Cham Marketwhich I wrote about previously.

Accommodation and Travel in Kampong Cham

For those planning to stay overnight in Kampong Cham, I recommend choosing a hotel by the Mekong River like Mariya Hotel, where I stayed and found good value for money. It offers Wi-Fi and a great surrounding atmosphere. Although mosquitoes are common near the water, they are manageable (Hotels in Kampong Cham)

). The riverside location is also convenient, close to the night market and bus station, making travel around Kampong Cham much easier. I also noticed some tourists renting bicycles to explore the town, which gives a quiet and natural perspective of Kampong Cham.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Experience

Kampong Cham is not just a passing town on the route from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. It has vibrant lifestyle and culture, especially the Kampong Cham fruit smoothies that are not just thirst-quenching drinks but represent freshness, flavor, and simplicity perfectly blended with the atmosphere of the fresh market and the Mekong riverside.

If you have a chance to visit Kampong Cham, don’t forget to try the fruit smoothies at the markets and street stalls I described.
