amazing mekong river fish: Discovering strange-shaped fish from the Mekong River in Cambodia
Once on the Mekong River in Cambodia, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to witness an amazing creation of nature — a "strangely shaped fish" I had never seen before. While cruising along the lower Mekong River, which connects to Takaev Province where I once stayed, today I will share fresh stories from the field so everyone can experience the atmosphere and uniqueness of this fish.
The Mekong River is the lifeblood of this region. I have traveled through Takaev Province, which borders Vietnam, and witnessed the simple and warm riverside lifestyle. This time, I intentionally cruised deeper into Cambodia to uncover the secret of a fish that local villagers have long talked about for its unusual shape unlike any other.
As my boat floated along the Mekong current, I met local fishermen managing their catch near the shore. They smiled warmly and gladly shared stories about the mysterious fish I saw. "This is a rare fish found in the Mekong," a young man told me, pointing to a fish with a rather strange shape, large size, curved fins like a water dragon, and colors unlike typical Mekong fish.
These strange fish are not only a natural curiosity but also reflect the richness of the Mekong River ecosystem, which still maintains its biodiversity well. I recalled the times I visited the Stung Market,a market full of fresh natural products, just like here, where locals sell various fish enthusiastically. The difference is that these strangely shaped Mekong fish are rarely seen in large markets.
Seeing these strange fish reminded me of the market atmosphere and local dishes I once tasted in southern Cambodia, such as in Kampot Province, which offers plenty of fresh seafood,or even grilled beef rice porridge in Svay Rieng Province, where I sat and chatted with locals. These feelings are connected by the sincerity of the locals and the nature that remains abundant.
I still remember while cruising the Mekong River, I talked with locals about fishing and riverside life. They said that sometimes the strange fish I saw are used as special food during festivals, or sometimes kept as ornamental fish because their shapes and patterns are as beautiful as artworks created by nature itself.
For travelers who love to discover new things, I, mr.hotsia, recommend cruising the lower Mekong River in Cambodia, especially near the connection to Takaev Province. Besides experiencing the riverside lifestyle, you might be lucky to see these strangely shaped fish, which are no longer just stories or legends but a reality waiting for you to experience firsthand.
If anyone is interested in fresh seafood, I recommend stopping by the market in Kampot Province, where I have eaten and recorded my experience.Such as large and affordable oysters at the Kampot market,or relaxing with a smoothie by the river — simple pleasures found in southern Cambodia.I have shared these in my southern Cambodia backpacking notes. All of these complete the travel experience perfectly.
Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want to encourage everyone interested in nature and culture along the Mekong River to open their hearts and explore for themselves. What I encountered this time was not just an ordinary fish but the wonder of the Mekong River that always has new stories to discover.
