Khmer food in Kampot Province, Cambodia

When talking about uniquely charming provinces in Cambodia, "Kampot" is one that I, mr.hotsia, must consider a must-visit destination. Upon arriving here, what impressed me was not only the scenery or ancient architecture but also experiencing the lifestyle and food of the Khmer people up close. As a traveler who loves to delve into local stories, I found that the food in Kampot is full of flavors and uniqueness that wonderfully convey authentic Khmer identity.

Kampot Province is located in the southwest of Cambodia, bordering Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand coastline. The atmosphere here is peaceful and natural, with the Kampot River flowing through the city, making it a hub for abundant fresh seafood. I strolled through the morning market here, which differs from typical Cambodian markets because it retains its traditional charm. I saw vendors and locals selling a variety of fresh items, including shrimp, shellfish, crabs, fish, and even locally grown native vegetables.

The food I tried in Kampot was diverse, ranging from dry Khmer-style noodles with a rich, unique flavor to Lok Lak, also known as fresh fish balls grilled until slightly charred. The aroma of spices and local herbs mixed with the sweetness of the fish makes this dish a favorite among both Khmer locals and tourists like me.

On the first day of my trip, I took a boat from Ta Kaew Province, a nearby province that also has a Vietnamese immigration boat checkpoint (read about my travel experience in Ta Kaew Province atTraveling Ta Kaew Province). The boat sailed along the lower Mekong River before reaching Kampot. I could feel the difference in atmosphere here compared to other places. Although it is a small town, the variety of food and local culture reflects the abundance and simple harmony.

One of my favorite dishes that I highly recommend is "Grilled Beef Rice Porridge," similar to the rice porridge we eat in the morning back home, but here it is special with fragrant grilled beef as a topping. The taste is smooth and comforting. Sitting in a small roadside shop eating rice porridge, I chatted with the shop owner and practiced a little Khmer language. It felt like truly connecting with the local way of life (read more aboutGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng Province)

). The Kampot morning market is another spot not to miss because besides abundant fresh seafood, there are other local dishes found only here, such as very fresh large oysters at surprisingly low prices. I have written in an articleFresh Seafood Oysters at Kampot Marketthat this market is a true center of deliciousness and eating culture for the people of Kampot.

Additionally, the atmosphere along the Kampot River is a chill spot I really enjoy. After walking the market and tasting food, I often sit and drink fresh fruit smoothies at a small riverside shop, watching people pass by and chatting casually with locals. Seeing this lifestyle made me feel like I truly experienced the real Cambodia from a perspective that most tourists might never see (read my notes on chilling by the Kampot River atBackpacking Southern Cambodia 13/41: Chilling, Drinking Smoothies, Eating by the Kampot River)

If you love seafood and want to try local dishes with bold flavors yet natural essence, Kampot is the answer. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee that traveling here will enrich your eating and travel experience in Cambodia deeply. And if you enjoy fresh markets, the morning market here is one you must experience yourself (read more about Kampot market atBackpacking Southern Cambodia 17/41: Kampot Market, Big and Cheap Oysters, Abundant Seafood)
