Khmer Fish Cake, a unique dish you must try when visiting Cambodia

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit Kampong Thom Market, a small province in Cambodia. This time, I tried a local dish that might look unusual to Thai people but is familiar and distinctive to the Khmer people. It is the Khmer Fish Cake, locally calledFish Cake Wrapped in Yardlong BeansThe special feature of Khmer Fish Cake lies in its ingredients and cooking method, which differ greatly from Thai fish cakes.

The Kampong Thom Market where I strolled is located next to a dry goods and agricultural equipment market, making the atmosphere lively all day. Locals shop enthusiastically. I passed by a stall selling Khmer Fish Cake, where the owner wrapped the fish cake with fresh, crispy yardlong beans. The aroma of spices and the smell of fish cake cooking on the pan attracted me to try some.

The taste of Khmer Fish Cake is clearly different from Thai fish cake. The fish cake is not made purely from fish or minced meat but mixed with small pieces of yardlong beans and local spices that provide a mild yet flavorful taste. Biting into it reveals a crispy outside and soft inside with a unique herbal fragrance. I really like this uniqueness because it shows that Khmer food is distinctive and has a deeper flavor than I expected.

Besides Khmer Fish Cake, Kampong Thom Market offers many other local foods to try, such as shaved ice with palm sugar, which I tasted while chatting with the Kampong Cham locals at the market. The atmosphere here is warm and friendly, like opening a door to the real lifestyle of Cambodian people.

Connect your experience with travel routes in Cambodia

If you want to experience the Khmer lifestyle seriously, mr.hotsia recommends traveling to Ta Kaew Province, which I have shared my experience in the articleTraveling Ta Kaew ProvinceThis is a small border town near Vietnam. I traveled there by Sorya Tour bus from Phnom Penh, which took about 2.5 hours. Although it is a small town, the local market atmosphere and street food here are equally charming.

Another place I want to recommend is Kampot Province, famous for fresh seafood and diverse local markets.Seafood, Kampot Morning Market, Kampot ProvinceIncluding fresh oysters that you can taste.Fresh Oyster Seafood Market, Kampot ProvinceI have experienced this and recorded it in a detailed review.

For those who love simple but flavorful local breakfast, don’t miss tryingGrilled Beef Rice Porridge in Svay Rieng ProvinceI have described the atmosphere of a small roadside rice porridge shop where people queue to buy takeout and eat warmly. This is the real life of Khmer people you won’t find in luxury resorts.

Khmer Fish Cake: Reflecting Khmer Lifestyle and Food Culture

When talking about Khmer local food, many dishes clearly reflect the culture and lifestyle of communities in each area. The Khmer Fish Cake I tried at Kampong Thom Market is no exception. This dish is not just a snack but also represents efficient use of local ingredients. Using yardlong beans, a native vegetable, in the fish cake adds both nutritional value and a flavor different from typical fried foods.

Moreover, walking through the market allowed me to feel the friendliness of the people, ready to share local stories, including simple local language conversations I tried practicing during the trip. This experience made the trip more meaningful than just sightseeing.
