Rattanaburi District, Surin Province: The Charm of Khmer Land That Remains Authentic

As mr.hotsia, I had the chance to experience the diverse lives of the Khmer people in Cambodia. Exploring Rattanaburi District, Surin Province, was one of the profound and impressive experiences. Although Surin Province is well-known in Thailand, in reality, this Rattanaburi is located on the Cambodian side and is a place where locals continue to live according to traditional ways.

I traveled to Rattanaburi District with the intention of experiencing the local market atmosphere and observing the daily lives of the people closely. The morning market here is the heart of the community, much like the morning market in Stueng, Thailand, that I have visited before.Stueng Morning MarketStill maintaining its traditional and friendly atmosphere, the market in Rattanaburi is no different. Most products are fresh local goods such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats that villagers sell with authentic flavors.

Walking through the market reminded me of my visit to Takaew Province.Traveling to Takaew ProvinceNot far away, although it is a province with few tourists, the lifestyle and warmth of the people are quite charming. Similarly, in Rattanaburi, I spoke with a rice porridge vendor much like those I met in Svay Rieng Province.Grilled Meat Rice Porridge from Svay Rieng ProvinceThis simple Khmer breakfast is one of my favorites because it not only fills the stomach but also allows me to absorb the culture through conversations with locals.

Food and Culture in Rattanaburi

Speaking of food in Rattanaburi, I must say it was a special opportunity to taste authentic Khmer dishes that are hard to find in big cities. The flavors here are usually mild but well-balanced, using fresh natural ingredients such as local vegetables, grilled meats, and unique dipping sauces that vary by each vendor.

One dish that impressed me greatly was Khmer dry noodles, which I had previously enjoyed in Kampot Province.Seafood at Kampot Morning MarketThe flavor is rich yet simple, delicious without much seasoning. Finding a small stall in Rattanaburi’s market serving this style of dry noodles made me feel connected to the Khmer culinary culture across several provinces perfectly.

Besides food, traveling to Rattanaburi also gave me a chance to see the simple and warm lifestyle of the villagers. Whether sitting and chatting with locals, strolling through the market, or riding a boat along the river connecting various communities, these are charms that cannot be found in typical commercial tourism.

Travel and Convenience

Although traveling to Rattanaburi District is not as convenient as to big cities, there are basic routes connecting nearby provinces such as Takaew Province, where I have taken buses from Phnom Penh. Traveling by bus or private car is easy with several trips daily.

Upon arriving at Rattanaburi market, I usually choose to walk to fully experience the surrounding atmosphere. Although there are some motorcycle taxis, walking slowly allows me to notice small details in people’s lives, such as conversations between vendors and customers or the laughter of children playing by the roadside.
