Eating Khmer Durian: Savor the Sweet and Creamy Taste from Cambodia
This journey of mine, mr.hotsia, takes us to the neighboring country of Cambodia to experience eating Khmer durian, which is as famous as any in the region. Although the province or city is not clearly specified, the sweet and creamy aroma of Khmer durian remains unforgettable to me.
Previously, I traveled through Ta Kaew Province, bordering Vietnam along the lower Mekong River route, which is a transit point for passenger boats between Vietnam and Cambodia. My Ta Kaew TripIt was the starting point to explore the local lifestyle and native foods in this area, experiencing the simplicity of a small town with markets and roadside eateries. But this time, I intended to delve deeply into the story of Khmer durian specifically.
Cambodian Durian: The Pearl of Tropical Fruits
The durian here is distinctly different from what we usually eat in Thailand. The sweet fragrance fills the area where fresh durians from the orchards are sold. I smelled the durians arranged on market stalls. Cambodians call durian “ទុរៀន” (durian), the same as in Thai, but the texture and sweet creamy taste have a unique character.
I spoke with a durian vendor at a local market and learned that they select good durian varieties from orchards in Kampot Province, which is renowned for high-quality fruits.Seafood and Fruits of Kampotare very famous, and durian is one of them.
Eating Khmer durian is not just about taste but also about experiencing the lifestyle of locals who carefully cultivate and tend the durian orchards. The suitable climate and soil make Cambodian durian sweet and creamy but not as heavy as some Thai varieties. I also tasted fresh durian ready to eat from the orchard, with smooth, soft flesh and rich flavor. Each bite had a gentle sweetness that left a refreshing feeling afterward.
Experience at the Khmer Durian Market
Morning markets in Cambodia have a unique charm that I, mr.hotsia, really like, includingStung Market Morningfilled with locals selling fresh goods, vegetables, fish, and various fruits, including Khmer durian sold naturally without much decoration. All the vendors smile warmly and chat casually, creating a cozy market atmosphere.
I walked to choose durian with a vendor who spoke a mix of local dialect and Khmer fluently. She told me Khmer durian starts fruiting in the summer, unlike Thailand where durian season begins mid-year until the end of the year. Buying durian here requires knowledge because there are both ripe durians and unripe ones used for cooking.
Eating Khmer Durian with Local Lifestyle
It’s surprising that eating durian is deeply connected to Cambodian culture and lifestyle. I also met a group of locals sitting together eating durian one afternoon. Their laughter and local language mixed with Khmer made me feel like I was eating durian with old friends.
There are also traditional durian-eating activities I saw in Kampot Province, where an annual fruit festival is held. Besides various durian varieties, there are local foods and snacks made from durian, such as fried durian and durian paste, which I have never encountered elsewhere.Backpacking Southern CambodiaMy trip was full of new stories and impressive flavors.
Khmer Durian Eating Route: Recommendations and Tips from mr.hotsia
For those who want to try Khmer durian, I recommend visiting fresh markets or durian stalls in big cities like Kampot Province. If you want a rural atmosphere, try the morning market in Ta Kaew that I visited.Traveling Ta Kaew ProvinceAlthough it’s a small town, there are shops and markets where you can fully enjoy fresh fruits like durian.
Choose durians with golden-yellow shells, evenly spaced spikes, and when tapped, a slightly hollow sound indicates the durian is perfectly ripe—not too hard or too mushy. Eating durian with sticky rice or hot ginger tea helps balance the sweet creamy taste and refreshes the palate.
