Siem Reap Angkor Thom

Within the Angkor World Heritage site, there are many temples to explore. One of them is Angkor Thom, located about 2 kilometers from Angkor Wat. Visitors can purchase daily, weekly, or 3-day passes, which allow access to all sites, including this one. The highlight of Angkor Thom is the ancient stone carvings that depict the life of people from over a thousand years ago. The carvings are beautifully crafted and have suffered minimal erosion.

What impressed me the most were the images of the Loy Krathong festival, cockfighting, chess, and local drinking customs clearly depicted. There are also scenes of battles between the Cham people and the Khmer Empire here, showing warships and military formations. These carvings reveal that in ancient times, men did not greet with palms pressed together but with the right hand covering the left elbow, and the left hand touching the right arm to show respect. Women, however, have used the palm-pressed greeting for over a thousand years. 2011 (Photo of Angkor Thom temple by mr.hotsia) Recommended Hotels in Siem Reap

Additional information from Wikipedia: Angkor Thom was the last and strongest capital city of the Khmer Empire, established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. It covered an area of 9 square kilometers north of Angkor Wat. The city contains many structures from early periods and those built by King Jayavarman VII and his successors. At the center of the city is the main temple of King Jayavarman called the Bayon Temple.

There are other important areas surrounding the strategic location to the north. The southern entrance gate of Angkor Thom is the most notable feature. It has four faces before entering the area, flanked by rows of giants (asuras) on the right and devas on the left, each carrying a naga serpent on both sides of the bridge. Inside the heart of Angkor Thom, you will find various structures. The southern gate area has been better preserved and restored than other parts. Map for traveling to Angkor Wat
