Apsara Dance and Various Khmer Dance Costumes in Siem Reap The Apsara or celestial nymph is a heavenly maiden, considered the consort of Indra according to Greek, Khmer, and Indian legends (referenced from wiki). The Apsara dance originates from the stone carvings at Angkor Wat, making it a must-see for visitors to Siem Reap. There are buffet restaurants in Siem Reap offering evening shows featuring authentic Khmer Apsara dance performances.
Besides the Apsara or Khmer dance, there are also traditional Khmer folk performances such as the rice planting dance and other cultural acts. On my latest trip to Siem Reap, I stayed at Reaksmey Chanreas Hotel, which I recommend for its affordability, good location, rooms, WiFi, and service. I booked the Apsara dance show through this hotel, which arranged it at Angkor Mondia Restaurant, a venue offering both dining and performances with a Thai buffet. You may also stay elsewhere and visit this restaurant for the show.
I recommend booking through your hotel to get a better price and to reserve front-row seats, which are essential for viewing the show. Arrive a bit early, around 6:00 PM, to enjoy some delicious food and perhaps order a reasonably priced bottle of wine. Enjoy the local music (Khmer xylophone) and chat with your companions before the performance starts, so you can focus on watching without disturbing others.
