I first tasted roast beef in Cambodia in Phnom Penh at a roast beef restaurant located behind Unalom Pagoda, near the Angkor Mithun Hotel where I stayed. At that time, Cambodia still allowed roasting a whole cow. I was impressed by the dipping sauce made from fermented fish mixed with coconut milk, chili, and lime. I thought it was the ultimate delicious taste in that city and I ate there several times at the same restaurant. On this trip to Siem Reap, I had the chance to try a roast beef (Ko Ang) restaurant near Psar Chaa, the old market of Siem Reap.
At this restaurant, I found the same dipping sauce but more concentrated and very delicious. I recommend ordering a draft Angkor beer to sip along, which enhances the flavor even more. Their dipping sauce is very rich. This restaurant is called DAMNAK MEAS (see the map from the GPS coordinates). But above all, I found a place with even better dipping sauce, which is a steamed beef offal stall in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey town.
That place is a street cart, but the same dipping sauce is extremely delicious and rich. Dipping it with steamed beef offal is great, and if you switch to dipping roast beef, it’s even more delicious for sure.
