Siem Reap Travel from Poipet Border to Siem Reap

Get ready for an exciting trip. I arrived at Rong Kluea Market early in the morning before 8 AM, so I decided to cross over to the Cambodian side, which is called Poipet. Then I continued my journey to Siem Reap. There are several ways to travel from Poipet to Siem Reap. The most popular is taking a shared taxi, which waits until full before departing. The popular taxi brand in Poipet is the Camry. The front passenger seat next to the driver fits two people, and the back seat fits four, making a total of six passengers. Quite crowded, isn't it?

Upon crossing the border, brokers will approach you. It's hard to avoid them because that's how the system works here. The brokers offer free motorcycle rides to the bus station, but you still have to tip them. I gave 15 baht, which seemed low, but I didn't mind and changed the subject since I was on a budget. When the broker quoted 300 baht, I agreed because I knew the price. Upon arrival, there might be negotiations to sit alone in the front seat but pay for two seats, totaling 600 baht.

I said I was willing to squeeze in because I didn't have extra money, and that was fine. Sometimes they negotiate for the taxi to leave immediately but with an extra fee, which I refused. You can tell them the broker said 300 baht. Eventually, I got the ride for 300 baht. The trip took 2 hours. The distance from Poipet to Siem Reap is less than 200 kilometers, but the taxi doesn't drive fast. When you arrive in Siem Reap, remember the name of the drop-off point: the old market area near accommodations and restaurants.

Sometimes some taxis charge less but drop you outside the city, so you have to find another ride. Just tell them to drop you at Prasat Chaa, and you'll be in Siem Reap. Then you can walk to find accommodation or follow guidebook recommendations. Don't feel pressured by motorcycle or tuk-tuk drivers. The other two options are hiring a taxi alone or taking a bus. The bus fare is about 200+ baht. I haven't tried these last two options, but I prefer shared taxis because they are faster and cheaper. Mr.Hotsia 2011 Additional tips from traveling to Siem Reap in August 2012.

There is a government shuttle bus waiting at the immigration stamp point. You can board this free bus, which takes you to one of two international tourist bus stations that alternate days, one near and one farther from the city. The farther station is larger. Here, you get fair, standard prices without bargaining or squeezing with locals. However, all taxis and buses stop for a 30-minute meal break, which slows travel by half an hour, a common complaint among tourists. Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in Siem Reap.
