Recommended Restaurants in Fenghuang Ancient Town, Zhangjiajie
Hello readers, I am mr.hotsia. I will share my firsthand experience from Fenghuang Ancient Town in Hunan Province, China. This small town on the banks of the Tuojiang River still impressively preserves its ancient architecture and traditional way of life. For travelers wanting to experience a nostalgic atmosphere and taste authentic local cuisine, I have some great restaurant recommendations for you.
On my first day arriving in Fenghuang, the excitement of seeing the ancient riverside town with its unique beauty and peacefulness made me want a special dinner. I chose a restaurant with a panoramic view of the bridge over the Tuojiang River to enjoy the atmosphere from daylight to dusk and then watch the bridge’s decorative lights at night—a sight I believe will stay in my memory for a long time. Restaurant Atmosphere and Appetizers Fit for a Martial Artist
To match the ancient town’s atmosphere, I decided to try Fenghuang’s special traditional liquor, served in stylish gourd bottles—both real gourds and plastic souvenirs. I sipped the liquor while waiting for each dish. Ordering here was a challenge since the menu was entirely in Chinese, but luckily the kind owner helped translate the menu into Thai on a phone, making it easy to choose dishes.
Must-Try Dishes
The first dish I recommend is the local-style hot pot featuring "duck blood cake," a famous specialty of Fenghuang and Hunan Province. This duck blood cake is made from processed duck blood formed into a dense block with a rich, unique flavor. Combined with a hot pot of rich broth and ancient Chinese spices, the taste is perfectly balanced. I also enjoyed other dishes like steamed herbal fish and fresh seasonal vegetables. Most importantly, pairing these with authentic Chinese liquor was amazing.
The restaurant’s atmosphere made me imagine traveling back 100 years, like a martial artist visiting this ancient town for a gathering (perhaps influenced by my many Chinese martial arts novels). I spent time watching the Tuojiang River’s view change with the city lights at dusk while the bridge was beautifully lit—a scene I believe will deeply impress travelers visiting Fenghuang.
Travel and Context of Fenghuang Town in Hunan Province
For those planning to visit Fenghuang Ancient Town, I recommend staying in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, first. From Changsha, it’s convenient to travel to Fenghuang, and there are many good accommodation options.mr.hotsia has written a detailed story about Changsha. The easiest way to get to Changsha is by bullet train from Guangzhou, taking about 3-4 hours. There are also taxis and buses available within the city for convenience.
After resting in Changsha, you can rent a car or hire a vehicle to Fenghuang, located in Zhangjiajie. Besides the famous Fenghuang Ancient Town, Zhangjiajie also offers stunning natural attractions like the world-renowned Zhangjiajie Mountains. Regarding food in Zhangjiajie, I have also compiled a guide inZhangjiajie Food Articlewhich can help you plan a complete food and travel itinerary.
