Eating Chinese Chicken: Zhengxin Chicken Steak is 正新鸡排 (Zhèngxīn jī pái)
Beggar's Chicken (叫化鸡)
Cooking with Thai girl Daeng Indoor China Nong Nene at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State

Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, is a place I, mr.hotsia, always stop by whenever I visit Zhangjiajie.

If you have plans to travel tothe ancient town of Fenghuangor to witness the magnificent limestone mountains atZhangjiajieChangsha is a city I, mr.hotsia, often use as a base, staying one night before continuing my trip. It is convenient for transportation, accommodation, and offers a perfect blend of modern city atmosphere with authentic Chinese urban life.

For me, the most convenient and economical way to get to Changsha is by bullet train from Guangzhou. The Changsha high-speed railway station is about 30 minutes from the city center. I have tried taking a bus here, but it was too long and tiring, so I don't recommend it. In Changsha city, there are plenty of taxis available, making travel very convenient. Wherever you want to go, it's easy to find and call a taxi.

The atmosphere in Changsha where I, mr.hotsia, stayed and took a walk

The last time I visited Changsha was on the night of December 31, 2012. I chose to stay in the city center to experience the countdown festival atmosphere. The locals organized a music show featuring a famous Chinese female internet artist who used an iPhone as the main instrument, creating a very exciting experience.

I walked around the downtown area filled with tall buildings and large shopping malls, with many fashion clothing stores and souvenir shops. I also tried walking along the local favorite food streets, which are like a collection of authentic Chinese flavors that I, mr.hotsia, love the most. Whether it was the fried stinky tofu with a strong smell that even I had to admit defeat, or the Zhengxin Chicken Steak shop that I once tried and loved (watch the clip atChinese Chicken Zhengxin Chicken Steak video)

Hunan Museum: A place I, mr.hotsia, have not visited yet but you should know about

If you are interested in history and antiques, the Hunan Provincial Museum is one of the city's attractions. It is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closed on Mondays). I, mr.hotsia, have not had the chance to visit personally but have heard that it houses the remarkably well-preserved body of a young woman about 2,100 years old from the Han Dynasty. There are also many other antiques. It is a valuable learning place for those who love ancient Chinese culture.

Lifestyle and relaxation in Changsha that impressed me, mr.hotsia

Besides modernity and shopping centers, I also experienced traditional Chinese foot massage here. It starts with soaking feet in warm water, cleaning toenails, then a focused foot massage on pressure points, which helps relieve fatigue very well. This is an experience I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying if you have the chance to visit Changsha.

If you enjoy walking through markets and tasting local food, don't miss the night markets or the food streets I recommended in this article. You will get to taste authentic Chinese dishes such as fried stinky tofu and Beggar's chicken, which is baked in clay until the skin is crispy and the meat tender (watch the preparation video atBeggar's Chicken video)

Weather and best time to visit Changsha according to mr.hotsia's experience

Changsha has very different weather between summer and winter. Winter, from November to March, has lows around 1-7°C. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures above 25°C from June to September. I, mr.hotsia, especially enjoy visiting at the end of the year, from late December to early January, when the weather is cool and you can experience an authentic Chinese New Year atmosphere.

If you visit Changsha, don't forget to connect your travel to other cities in Hunan

If you plan to visit the ancient town of Fenghuang or play in the snow at Tianmen Mountain, staying one night in Changsha is a very convenient option. From here, you can easily continue by car to various destinations. Accommodation in Changsha ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels.

If you are interested in local life and culture, you should explore markets in Changsha as well as other markets in Hunan Province such asNanning Marketwhich I have visited and tried the local fermented rice there. Visiting local markets helps you better understand the lifestyle of people in this province.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia about Changsha

As a frequent traveler interested in both culture and local food, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that Changsha is a perfect city for travelers who want to experience modernity without losing the roots of authentic Chinese culture. This city is not just a transit point to Zhangjiajie but also a memorable stop full of eating, sightseeing, and shopping experiences.
