Changsha, a prosperous city in central Hunan that you must visit at least once
When talking about Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, many people may not be very familiar with it yet, but for mr.hotsia, this is a city of great importance and vibrant energy on the central China travel route. Anyone planning to visitAncient Fenghuang Townor Zhangjiajie often stop to rest or explore Changsha first because it is a transportation hub and a lively big city that perfectly blends old culture with modernity.
From mr.hotsia’s personal experience, the most convenient and economical way to get to Changsha is by high-speed bullet train from Guangzhou. The Changsha high-speed railway station is only about 30 minutes from downtown, unlike buses which take longer and can be quite tiring. Once in Changsha, getting around is very convenient because there are many taxis available at affordable prices, allowing us to explore the city easily.
Walking Experience in Changsha with the Real Local Lifestyle
During my visit to Changsha, I spent one night in the city center on December 31, 2012. The atmosphere was full of excitement for the countdown event, with live music performances by a famous Chinese internet singer streamed live on iPhone right on the street. I strolled through the downtown area filled with tall buildings, large shopping malls, and fashion clothing markets offering a wide variety of choices. Whether modern fashion or local souvenirs, everything was easy to find and reasonably priced.
What I liked most was walking along Changsha’s famous food street. There are many local dishes to try, from simple menus like the fried Zhengxin Chicken Steak (正新鸡排) which I tried and found delicious, to unique-smelling stinky tofu. Although the strong smell made me pass on it, locals consider it a city specialty.
Additionally, I tried traditional Chinese foot massage here, which included soaking feet in warm water, nail cleaning, and detailed hand massage. It was a relaxing and novel experience for me as a Thai. If you visit Changsha, don’t forget to try it—it really helps relieve fatigue after a full day of walking.
Hunan Provincial Museum and 2,100 Years of History
For those interested in history and antiques in Changsha, don’t miss the Hunan Provincial Museum, open from 9 AM to 5 PM and closed only on Mondays. Although I didn’t visit personally this time, I learned that the museum preserves a female corpse about 2,100 years old from the Han Dynasty in remarkably good condition, along with rare antiques and artifacts hard to find in other cities.
Changsha as a Base to Other Cities in Hunan
Changsha is a great starting point for traveling to the ancient town of Fenghuang or to enjoy snow at Tianmenshan. I recommend staying here for a night or two to prepare before continuing your journey. There are many good accommodations in Changsha at reasonable prices compared to the comfort offered. Traveling from Changsha to other cities in Hunan usually involves hiring a car or taxi, allowing flexible travel plans without rushing.

Weather and Best Time to Visit Changsha
Regarding weather, Changsha has distinct temperature differences between winter and summer. Winter, from November to March, has lows between 1-7°C, perfect for those who like cold weather like me. I chose to visit at the end of the year when temperatures were around 5°C—refreshingly cool with great atmosphere. Summer is hot, with temperatures above 25°C from June to September. If you prefer cool weather, visit late in the year; if you like lush green and hot weather, summer is also a good time.
