Backpacking India 32/129: toy train full Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Enjoy the toy train in Darjeeling

When talking about Darjeeling, a city on the Himalayan mountains famous for tea and stunning mountain views, one thing Mr.Hotsia never misses is riding the Indian toy train, also known as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). This is a UNESCO World Heritage site still operating in India today. This railway is special because it uses small vintage steam locomotives running through winding and steep mountain routes that are thrilling. It is an experience I want everyone to try at least once in their life.

I was ready with my backpack for this trip, choosing to board the train from Darjeeling’s main station, a starting point that makes you feel like traveling back to the British colonial era in the mid-19th century. Darjeeling was once a summer retreat for the British escaping the heat of the plains. This railway connects Darjeeling with Siliguri in the plains, which I have previously described in an article.Backpacking trip to Siliguri, West Bengal, India Siliguri (Siliguri)Then

This toy train ride is not just an ordinary journey; it is filled with mixed feelings—the steam scent billowing from the locomotive, the rhythmic sound of steel wheels on rails, and the constantly changing scenery of lush forests, small villages, and Himalayan peaks with low-hanging clouds as if floating in the sky.

Along the way, Mr.Hotsia recommends preparing your camera and smartphone because there are stops and photo opportunities throughout the route. You may also see locals in traditional attire walking along the railway tracks. This atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the world. The toy train here is not just a means of transport but a moving cultural and historical experience.

Darjeeling, a city beyond tea and vintage trains

Darjeeling is located over 2,000 meters above sea level, with cool weather year-round, and is a prime tea-growing region in India. Here you can find both Assam and green teas filling the town with fragrant aromas. Mr.Hotsia has shared inTraveling Darjeeling on your ownthat this city has ethnic and cultural diversity, including Nepali, Tibetan, British colonial descendants, and indigenous Indian peoples, making it charming and full of fascinating variety.

Equally interesting is the main street in town with a small fresh market where I stopped to find local food and goods. This market is near the intercity bus queue and gathers locals selling fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local spices, as well as dried goods rare in big cities. This market is quieter than typical tourist markets and offers a great chance to experience the real lifestyle of Darjeeling residents. Read more atFresh market, Darjeeling market, India

Darjeeling food that Mr.Hotsia loves

Arriving in Darjeeling, you must try MOMO, a local dish similar to xiaolongbao or steamed buns. They come steamed or fried, mildly spicy, and very flavorful. Additionally, there are local Indian dishes blending regional cultures, such as fried rice, Mongolian chicken, or even Western fast food like KFC located in the town center for those wanting a change of pace.

Mr.Hotsia once recommended that to save money traveling in town, try walking from the airport to the jeep parking lot and negotiate a fixed price with jeep drivers, which is much cheaper than regular taxis. For those wanting a hearty meal, read more atDarjeeling cuisine, India

Accommodation in Darjeeling chosen by Mr.Hotsia

For accommodation, Mr.Hotsia recommends Dekeling Hotel where I stayed recently. The usual price on Google Maps is about 2,200 THB per night, but I went during the rainy season and booked in person for only 800 THB per night. The hotel is located in the city center next to a popular walking area for tourists, with nearby coffee shops and restaurants, as well as a church and an open square where locals often relax. Although there are not many restaurants, there are enough options. Read the full review atRecommended hotels in Darjeeling, India
