Music from Indian Wanderers Darjeeling, India

When talking about Darjeeling, a small town in the Himalayas in West Bengal, India, no one can fail to recognize it as a town filled with the fragrant aroma of tea and world-class mountain views. But for me, mr.hotsia, Darjeeling is more than that. It is a cultural and musical crossroads of Indian wanderers who arrive with the cold breeze and an unhurried rhythm of life.

I arrived in Darjeeling one late morning. The cool, damp air mixed with the scent of tea leaves greeted me as soon as I stepped down from the jeep I rented from a parking lot near the airport. (For those interested in detailed travel info, read more atTraveling Darjeeling on Your Own)

In the fresh market along the main street of the town, I heard local music from a group of wanderers joyfully playing their instruments amid the atmosphere of small shops selling fresh and dried goods. I remember writing about this market inFresh Market, Darjeeling, Indiawhich is a place frequented by locals and deep-travel tourists alike.

The music I heard was not just ordinary tunes but songs telling stories of the lives of people who traveled from various parts of India and Nepal. These wanderers held traditional instruments like the Sarangi and bamboo flute, along with local drums whose rhythms made hearts beat along. I didn’t hesitate to sit down, listen, and chat with them. One young man told me that this music is a way of life, expressing hopes, love, and hardships of the people in this region.

Listening to the music from Indian wanderers in Darjeeling reminded me of the cultural diversity of this town, which blends India, Nepal, and Tibet harmoniously. This is clearly reflected in the local lifestyle and the diverse food, as I have shared before inDarjeeling Cuisine, India

After soaking in the music that lifted my spirits, I strolled along the small alleys of the town and found a small coffee shop filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked bread. I chose to sit in a place with a view of the church and an open courtyard, a popular meeting spot for Darjeeling locals. (I also stayed nearby at Dekeling Hotel; details are available atRecommended Hotels in Darjeeling, India)

In the afternoon, I decided to ride the Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage and one of Darjeeling’s symbols. The old steam train runs through hills and small villages, offering new perspectives of the town and distant nature. The train whistle blended with the lingering local music in my heart, creating an experience I believe will stay with travelers like me for a long time.

One night, while walking through the night market, I encountered another group of wanderers playing local songs and singing about love and hope of the local people. The music was not just melodies but stories deeply connected to the way of life in Darjeeling.

For those interested in experiencing the charm of Darjeeling beyond just sightseeing or tea tasting, I recommend wandering through the fresh market, trying momo, a local dish at roadside stalls, and don’t miss the chance to listen to the music of Indian wanderers that will warm your heart incredibly.

For my next journey from Darjeeling, I plan to explore Siliguri, not far away, which is the gateway to Sikkim and a regional travel hub. (For those who want to read more about backpacking, clickBackpacking in Siliguri, West Bengal, India)

If you want to see a different side of India, Darjeeling and the music of its wanderers are the answer I, mr.hotsia, recommend you experience yourself.
