Pelling, a small town in the Himalayas, West Sikkim, India

When talking about mr.hotsia's travels in Sikkim, India, one of the towns I was impressed with and must share is “Pelling” — a small town hidden at an altitude of 2,150 meters (about 7,200 feet) above sea level, surrounded by the majestic Himalayas. This town is located in West Sikkim, just 10 kilometers from the district office in Geyzing.

The route from Geyzing to Pelling is straightforward, with regular bus services connecting the two towns. Although some road sections are still under repair to accommodate the growing number of tourists, the town's atmosphere remains pure and peaceful. I arrived in Pelling in late autumn, with cool weather that made me reach for my jacket. The Himalayas stretch as a breathtaking backdrop, especially the Kanchenjunga peak, known as the third highest mountain in the world, which can be viewed closely from this town.

Travel and Connectivity in Sikkim

For me, traveling from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, about 115 kilometers away, taking a shared jeep was a convenient and memorable experience. Riding through winding mountain roads that change with the seasons allowed me to fully experience the lifestyle of the people and the diverse nature of Sikkim. The travel story to Gangtok that I wroteherealso helps provide a better overall understanding of the routes and connections between towns in this state.

The nearest airport to Pelling is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, approximately 135 kilometers away. If you choose to fly here, you must take a jeep or bus from Siliguri to continue to Sikkim, especially Pelling, which is a very attractive destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

Nature and Must-Do Activities in Pelling

Upon arriving in Pelling, the first thing mr.hotsia felt was the peace and purity of this land. The lush green trees, pristine forests, and fresh air made me want to explore the surrounding areas endlessly. I hiked on natural trails that remain largely untouched, encountering various bird species and wildlife living in these forests.

In winter, Pelling is covered with pure white snow. I was lucky to witness this myself, which is a rare experience in this region and makes the town look like a fairy tale land. For those who love challenges and adventure, Pelling is a great starting point for mountain climbing or trekking in the Himalayas.

Culture, Lifestyle, and People in Pelling

In Pelling, most people are Buddhists and use the Sikkimese language as their main language. Additionally, local languages such as Nepali, Hindi, and English are used for daily communication. I had the opportunity to talk with the locals, who were friendly and warmly welcomed tourists. The stories and lifestyles of the people here are clearly different from what I have seen in larger cities like Siliguri or Gangtok.

I recommend experiencing the local lifestyle through homestays, just like the experience I had atDahlap Homestay in PellingSpending time with locals, listening to traditional songs, or tasting local dishes made with fresh ingredients from the area will make your trip more complete and meaningful.

Local Food and Markets in Pelling

Speaking of food, Pelling has a small market where locals sell agricultural products and local foods. I tried Pelling fried rice, which has a mellow flavor and a unique spice aroma unlike anywhere else. There are also many popular Nepali dishes such as MoMo, steamed or fried dumplings with various fillings that smell delicious. These foods reflect the harmonious blend of Nepali and Sikkimese cultures.

For those who enjoy watching local atmosphere videos, I recommendPelling Fried Rice Song by a street singer in Sikkimwhich will let you experience the vibe and liveliness of this town from another perspective.

Summary and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

Pelling is a small town full of natural charm and interesting culture. I, mr.hotsia, encourage you to open your heart and travel here slowly to experience all the feelings this town offers — from the spectacular Himalayan views, trekking in pristine forests, to chatting with friendly locals.

To fully explore Sikkim, consider planning trips connecting to other towns like Namchi in southern Sikkim or Gangtok, the state capital, which I have described in the articleTravel to Gangtok, Sikkim, IndiaandNamchi Town, South Sikkim, Indiato make this trip filled with unforgettable impressions and memories.

Finally, if you enjoy unhurried travel, love nature and authentic culture, Pelling is the answer that mr.hotsia recommends you experience yourself.
